DHCP problem on 7

Hi,
a friend brought me his laptot HP Pavilion dv6500 (6525em to be precise) with Windows 7 installed. There is one problem, DHCP does not work on ethernet port. When I switch it to DHCP it just does not assign me IP (when I run ipconfig /renew it times out), although on my home computer in Vista it works without any problems.

Also if I set IP manually on the laptop (correct IP for subnet I use) it works OK. Can anyone help me to diagnose and fix it?

If the machine had been used previously on another home network, you might want to reset the modem and router to refresh it's dhcp before powering the laptop back on.

I just restarted both computer and my router, no dice.. This is not supported model of pavilions, so do you think this could be caused by wrong/incompatible driver? It does not seem so to me, since the networking is working, it's just the DHCP that doesn't. And I checked the Services and the DHCP is listed as running and I also tried restarting it, but still nothing..

Your Internet Service Provider may be using a static as opposed to dynamic (DHCP) server. Call you ISP and ask.

nope, I configured the router, and it is definitely using DHCP (it works on my computers)..

router has little or nothing to do with this problem, normally. It's more of a modem issue.

Try this in order:
1: power off your modem completely (power cord = take out of the back of the modem)
2: power off your router (power cord = take it out)
3: power OFF your computer(s) (all of them)
4: plug ethernet cable into your laptop *But keep it powered off for now*
5: Plug the modem back in
5a: wait for modem lights to cycle through completely (give it 4 minutes to be safe)
6: Plug Router power back in
6a: wait for router lights to cycle through and maintain connectivity
7: Power on the problematic laptop *make sure you only have 1 adapter broadcasting for an IP address*
8: check ip address

okay, tried all and still no connection.. tried disabling ipv6 and it did not fix it. I still believe the problem is not within the network (since friend brought it to me because it did not work in his network - also DHCP), but rather driver/windows/laptop issue, any other ideas how to find out what is wrong.

What I noticed, that the ipconfig /renew fails (time out), but the interface has ip address of 169.254.166.27/16 and this is not what my network looks like (mine is 192.168.100.0/24)

the 169* is apipa, it's the automatic ip that your machine assigns to itself when it has no response from dhcp.

Can you do a ipconfig /all and paste it into a reply?

have you tried looking for updates on NIC drivers or alternatives or rolling back ?

Hello! I'm on the same issue with an HP computer!
The Wireless and the LAN gave me same error: not obtaining data from DHCP.
Anyone solved this? I tryed everything, without success...

- Drivers didn't help
- Resetting Winsock catalog didn't help
- My LAN is OK, since I can connect with other computers
- Restored PC with default HD image (it worked for a while and then same thing)

I let you notice that if i put IP, SubnetMask, Gateway and DNS manually, everything works well...

Any help is really appreciated...
Now i'm restoring the PC again, when the operation is done I will post my IPCONFIG data, but i don't think it will help...
