Solved Did an update cause the safe to remove hardware message to go away?

Did a recent update cause the safe to remove hardware balloon message to go away?


Its missing when I eject the media doing a right click on the taskbar.

I have always show all icons and notification on the taskbar checked.

Hi, No an update has not caused this problem to happen.
Type cmd into the search window and highlight and right click "Run as Administrator" the cmd.exe up the top.
Type sfc /scannow and then hit enter.
Let the scan complete and re-boot.
See if it is now normal again.

I think I had the balloon when the usb ejected, no matter which policy was checked. The only change was some software updates (email, browsers & flash) & windows 7 updates and didn't install the INTEL - System - 10/3/2016 12:00:00 AM - 10.1.1.38 optional update. I also did some partition changes.

I think it might of had something to do with partition changes--I made using MiniTool Partition Wizard Free.

As far as I know - yes.

So do you get the icon but not the balloon or are they both missing?

I see. You can right click the icon but no balloon notification. Perhaps try rebuilding icon cache followed by a reset of notification area icons cache. A reboot between each is needed. Plus you'll need to reconfigure notification area icons.

I haven't loaded this months round or at least the security only update this month yet so I can't say that it hasn't but last months.... have not affected the icon showing up after plugging in a flash drive...

Callender, I got it working for all usb drives. I had to do two times. One regular flash drive (no-reboot) and one usb flash drive that pretends to be a usb hard drive (reboot). That fixed both the flash drive & usb Toshiba hard drive.


Note, Toshiba hard drive wouldn't allow the change. So I used sandisk flash drive and after a reboot both now show safe to remove.

I am also in the same boat. I observe that some changes have taken place in the last one or two days.. When I click on the safely remove icon the usual balloon showing the drive appears.. When I click on the drive to be unplugged, no message appears . The safely remove icon just disappears. Earlier there used to be a message "oh! yes you can do that now" and then the icon will disappear.

I haven't made any changes to my system. I am yet to download this month's updates. it is many many days since I installed the Dec updates but I have noticed the change only in the last two days.

I am not going to troubleshoot this problem. If I start troubleshooting every annoyance that Microsoft/Windows creates, I will be doing that only whole life.

Actual it is one of these updates. I tested it out with a backup.

At least I know its not a virus or malware.

The reason I marked this unsolved. After shutting the computer down and restarting the problem came back.

jumanji do you have Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2017or spybot s&d 1.6.2.0 installed def update 1.6.6.32 installed? I'm just trying to do process of elimination. I can confirm its not any browser updates.

As I told I haven't yet installed the Jan 2017 updates. So it as causing that problem is ruled out. And of course I keep updating the MS Securitiy Essentials. So that could be the only spoiler. I had guessed it to be even before you asked that question. (Apart from MSE I only have MBAM which in any case I hadn't updated during the last ten days.)

Just to check I went on to taskbar Properties > Customise. Windows Explorer - Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media. It is on 'Only show notifications" as ever since Windows was installed. Changed it to 'Show icon and notifications" and voila " Oh yes. You can safely remove your device" appeared. Hmmm... was I delighted? ya, briefly, .But that was only for the first removal after the change. Next time I plugged in the USB device and tried to safely remove - No message.

Now what? As I said if I start troubleshooting every annoyance that Microsoft/Windows creates, I will be doing that only, whole life.

So get going. Do not listen to anyone telling you to do this or that. You will just be wasting your time.

Another suggestion:

Device Manager> Right click on disk > Properties > Policies

Check that Enable Write caching is enabled

Then right-click on the USB Drive (in Explorer) > Properties >Policies. Choose Better Performance. See if you can eject it.

What I did update was this

I didn't install the Jan 2017 preview update.

I removed the January, 2017 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 update. I see MSE update maybe the cause after all. That would explain why the problem came back when I tried those suggestions in this thread, MSE did another auto update.

I have installed all the Windows 7 updates including the Jan Monthly Rollup one & I use MSE which is kept fully updated & I have not had any problems with the Safely Remove Hardware issue.

Now, I am almost positive that it is MSE for some users. I uninstalled MSE as a test. The safely remove hardware now pops up when you click on the usb icon located in the task bar & eject the drive.

I think there is a fix coming down the line. I did a manual update windows 7 of MSE sp1, its working but I don't know if it will stick. I also don't know if you can do a manual update with windows 10 defender.

Yesterday night (17 Jan 2017) when I shut down my PC, it configured some update. This morning when I booted , it completed the update. When I checked the update history it is a MSE definition update. However that didn't fix the problem. So a fix not yet.

I do get this message in W10, but I have never gotten a safe to remove hardware message, the icon simply disappears and I remove the flash drive, never had an issue yet.
