I'm glad to see my thread still kicking around. I am still getting Ultimate but can't decide between OEM and retail. I have done 2 motherboard switches in the last 3 weeks. I feel I may need retail. I will most likely go OEM.

What is the difference between OEM Ultimate and Retail Ultimate? Anything extremely important?

There are tons of threads on this if you do a search of the forum.

OEM - one computer only forever
Retail - you can "take" the software to your next computer

If you're a builder retail makes some sense. If not OEM makes some sense. There is a BIG price difference. OEM is about half the price. It makes it hard on us builders. haha

Hm.. well crappis. I ordered the OEM version of Ultimate x64 a week ago or so. I thought that since I have yet to actually call MS for support, I wouldn't miss not having it with this version either. I didn't know there was any other real difference between the OEM and the retail versions. Could somebody break this down for me so I can see my screw-up clearly?
You say OEM is for "One computer forever"... But I plan on rebuilding this beast as the times change. For instance when SSD's come down to something a little more reasonable I thought of putting the OS on that.... MS isn't keeping track of hard drives now are they??

Hello Tang.

It's the mobo it's tied to, usually a re-activation by phone will take care of that.

Well....I have been saying I would get Ultimate for months now but when it came down to ordering, I ordered Professional - OEM. I hope it works out. Pro has all the features I will ever need. I just hope the OEM part works out. I have switched motherboards 3 times in the last month. Maybe that will be it for a while.....

The pro version I ordered also says quote:

BitLocker requires Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 1.2

My mobo HAS a TPM but the chart on the front page says Pro does NOT have bitlocker. Maybe it has it IF your mobo is equipped with a TPM.

I probably missed it, but is the Starter edition going to be available for purchase? I'd like to make the change from XP Home on my netbook, but haven't seen it for sell anywhere.

My desktop PCs will be loaded with 7 Premium on one (2.7ghz dual-core, 2gb ram), and 7 Pro on the other (2.5ghz quad, 4GB ram). Both of those copies of 7 I ordered tonight from Newegg, along with a larger hard drive, and more ram for my netbook. If Starter's not going to be available to the public, I suppose I'm stuck with XP, because I don't feel my little netbook is powerful enough for 7 Premium.

There are differences

Ultimate Windows 7 is is offered at the full $219 price.

Windows 7 Ultimate edition sports just 2 features that you won't find in Windows 7 Professional: a full language pack, which includes support for 35 languages, and the company's BitLocker software.

and Windows 7 Ultimate is really only Windows 7 Enterprise by another name. It offers nothing compelling that would make home or even small business users want to buy it. And yet, Microsoft is still selling it at full price.

I had to go with Ultimate. I'm happy that Windows 7 comes with 32 and 64 bit DVD's. I installed the 32-bit for now and everything I ran on Vista is working flawlessly. I may have to experiment this upcoming weekend and to a clean install of 64 (since I never have used that lat .75% of my RAM ;). I suspect that some of my software wont work on the x64 but it will be a fun experiment!

One thing here is for certain though. Those of us who loved Vista will ABSOLUTELY ADORE 7. My PC is running in such a superior way I wish I had been able to tweak Vista to run like this a long time ago.
