Differences between basic and ultimate

I would have been happy with the business (professional) but since I had the choice on my technet subscription I went with ultimate. Home premium missing what remote desktop which I consider a key feature and XP mode which I have yet to use but is something I didn't want to lose and of course gpedit.

I have ultimate and the one thing that everyones stating that is really the only difference (bit locker) I cant even use because it says I dont have a "TPM chip." What do only really high end computers have TPM chips built in?
Other than bit locker i cant understand from the Poll why everyone wants ultimate.

Because it is the top of the line, perhaps?

Pardon the intrusion in what might seem a bit unrelated. I have just acquired Ultimate, and I wish to install it OVER my present version, which is HOME PREMIUM. What frightens me is that i might lose all the settings that I have worked so hard to get right, and lose the programs which I have installed and which are working. Does ANYONE here know if the Ultimate will install and allow me to keep my current settings and programs, or will I lose all and have to reinstall everything? Is there a way to safely secure what I have? Thanks to anyone for help in this matter.

Do you read the pages you link? That was advertising of win7 to enterprises (or businesses). Dont bother, its not that important.

Please explain precisely HOW and WHERE I should back up my settings. Once you start the clean install for Win 7 Ultimate, you lose control of the process. Windows will be installed on Drive c, and I would expect there to be an "Old Windows" entry in the new Windows directory. From that, one would have to fish out what he wished to re-use.
The idea of a clean install bothers me, in that it usually means everything before it is wiped out, including the registry.

Clean install eliminates all problems, cookies, viruses, files, everything. There will not be a old.windows dir, since its a clean install. You can choose on which drive you want to install the OS on. Backup files by copying them to an extrernal HDD, or an internal 2. one, or a diffirent partition on the disk, if youre not going to format the entire disk, but just the partition you had the OS on.

I don't want to experiment wityh something new and experimental. I am hoping that an expert here in the forum will tell me:
1. IF it can be done
2: how to do it.
My bottom line is to try to preserve the programs I already have running under Win 7 Home Premium, and then be able to run them under a clean install Win 7 Ultimate done with clean install.
Any help from anyone on this goal?

Well youre gonna have to install all of youre programs again, after a clean install. You cant keep the programs in the case of a clean install, only by upgrade.
