When I remote in to my work computer from my home computer (both Win7 Pro), I get a different desktop. Not totally different, but it messes up my desktop icons. I have all the icons, they're just shuffled around. My desktop wallpaper is gone as well. My work machine has a relatively plain blue background and when I log in remotely, it's black. The background isn't a major issue, but it would be nice if the desktop shortcuts didn't get messed up. If I reset the icon configuration on my work pc and set my remote session icons to match my work arrangement, they still end up shuffled. It's almost like there are 2 profiles locked down. I can re-arrange things, but they revert back to their original setup when I log out and back in again.
My machine at work is on a domain. I connect to my work network using Cisco Anyconnect to set up a VPN. I've Googled this issue quite a bit and can't find anything that explains this situation.

Try unchecking the "Auto Arange Icons" option when you rightclick on the desktop and select "View".

I've been out of town for a while - just got back. While I was away, the remote desktop stayed the same each time I logged on. When I got to work this morning, I noticed that my desktop was still 'good'. Then I remembered that I didn't log out anytime over the past week, I just disconnected my session. When I left work, I restarted my pc. I just logged in remotely and my desktop is all shuffled up again. There must be a setting somewhere. The desktop background is different too.

Hi Spkeller,

if you are using windows remote desktop connection. after clicking "remote desktop connection" you should be prompted with an authentication log.in and password. under that, there is options button.

on the "Display" tab: check the display configuration it should be "Large".
then on the "Experience" tab: on the "allow the following:" you can choose what ever you want to display on your remote session. i suggest to uncheck desktop background to have a better remote performance.
