Solved Different Reasons BSOD

I don't know what is causing all the BSODs I started to have since yesterday. I get a couple a day and I have not changed any hardware, not even USB, for a month. The reasons are random. I really REALLY need your help.

I ran 2 memtests for at least 5 minutes, but no errors. I ran OCCT 4.0 beta 9 from the Guru website, also no issues. Ran another diagnostic program (name I don't remember), which found no issues.

My computer is a Phenom II 555 with MSI-785GTM-E45 board. I have an Nvidia GT240 and disabled the onboard video. Running Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. This is a custom PC built by me and it's been around 2 years with this rig.

6 of 9 were related to memory issues. Memtest needs to be run for 6-8 passes and that takes hours. I would


Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program.

Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.



Driver verifier

I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

Ok, I believe I have memtest86 on either Hiren's bootcd or the Ultimate bootcd, so running this overnight shouldn't be a problem.

So if the memory test passes, then I should do that verifer.exe proceedure, got it. I'll get back to you when either one fails, or if all passes.

Wierd, I ran the memory test overnight and it gave me like 10 errors total. So then I took out the RAM, tested them individually, in each of the two slots, and got no errors. Then I let the computer rest for an hour to cool off, reinserted both RAMs, and ran the test for another 5 hours. This time the test said "Completed with no errors". So...maybe the RAM got loose in the slots and by taking them out and reinserting them, the problem went away?

Anyway, I'm gonna proceed with the verifier procedure. I guess I'll post after 36 hours.

Update 1: Scratch that, as soon as I did the verifier procedure, I got instant crash while Windows was loading. It said something about HIDclass.sys, which I assume is a Human Interface Device. So I had to boot into Safe Mode. Also, I noticed that in Device Manager, under System Devices there was a Code 31 issued for "Consumer IR Devices". Weird thing is that in normal mode it doesn't have an issue. Also it uses a Microsoft driver.

I've attached my latest BSOD minidumps, but I couldn't get a perfmon report since I'm in Safe Mode. So now what? It would be great if you could tell me the Ven and Dev of the device that's causing the problem so that I can remove it.

Update 2: I tried to remove devices myself. I unplugged all USB devices except for keyboard and mouse. Even removed TV tuner card. But it still crashes at the same point. I dunno what to do now

Holy c***, I turned on my comp this morning, had two BSODs while booting and decided to run memtest86+ As I type this I've gotten 500 memory errors in 7 min 15 sec!!

Then I shut down my computer, wait a couple minutes, turn it on, and run the memory test again. This time there is NO errors!! What the hell is going on here??

At this point, I'm starting to think that the RAM is not at fault here. I'm thinking more like motherboard or PSU...but how to rule one out?

Memtest can be used to test memory and the mobo slots. Both tests are outside the windows environment so as to eliminate it as the culprit.

Use a known good memory stick to test each of the mobo slots.

Wow, hadn't known it had been so long. Over the past 4 days I haven't had a single crash or BSOD. It's not consistent and that's what bugs me. Still using the same RAM. If only there were another explanation because everything has been working fine for a while now.

At this point I think it's either a motherboard or PSU problem. I'm gonna upgrade each including the RAM, one at a time over the course of 4 months. I think that should solve the issue I'm having.
