Hi all
I was wondering if I just download the Ultimate from Technet can I install W7 Professional without doing the specific download for the Professional version but just edit out the ei.config file.

I know I'll need a different key for professional but I can get that from technet.

Has anybody tried this yet -- I'm just trying to save the bother of downloading another 3GB iso if all the data I need is on the first one - especially as for the rest of this week I'm going to have REALLY SLOW download speeds over a hotel public wi-fi connection.

I'd like to install PROFESSIONAL on another laptop (clean install).

Cheers
jimbo

Someone's made a tool to convert your ultimate ISO into a professional ISO and back again (with the correct and matching hashes), so that you don't have to waste your bandwidth.

Info: Windows 7 RTM ISO Image Edition Switcher - Neowin Forums

Edit: oh, and it looks like this tool can remove ei.cfg, too. And fast, in less than a second. Certainly beats all the other ei.cfg removal methods and tools out there. :D

yep just do delete the ei.cfg from the image (of course you have to it a certain way if you burning a disc ;), just do a search here and follow the steps...)

Hi Jimbo,

The best thing to do is check the file sizes of the downloads. If they are the same then it's just a case of editing/deleting the ei.cfg file and installing.

Hope this helps :)

Yes you can,
If you have the iso version already, open it in PowerISO, UltraISO or any other ISO App you have, go to the "source" folder and find the "ei.cfg" file and remove it, then save the iso file to a different location or just burn it directly to a DVD disk. When you close it it will ask if you want to save as changed, (you choose).
When you boot up (With the DVD in the drive) and you go through the install process you will get the option to select the version you want.
