Hello, I was wondering what the difference between Windows 7 Ultimate 219.00$ and the 319.00$ one?

Hi Rick99,

I am Roy from Dell Social Media and Community team.
With regards to your query,

For $319.99 you get the full version of Windows 7 Ultimate.
Whereas $219.99 you get the upgrade version for Windows Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate.

So the basic difference is if you are going for $219.99 version then you must already have windows Vista installed on your PC. You can also refer the following link for more info, http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2009/06/windows-7-pricing-announced-cheaper-than-vista/

Let us know if this helps

Thanks and regards,

Find out if you really need the feature that Ultimate comes with. That's alot of money to spend if you don't need the functionality. I think too many people think that Windows 7 Ultimate is far superior because it has Ultimate in the name. If it wasn't for the fact that I got a free copy of 7 Ultimate by attending the "New Efficiency" launch program, I would have not purchased anything more than Professional for my needs.

Yeah, most people are just fine on Home Premium. I think most people on Ultimate either 1). Got it free like me 2) Pirated it, and if you get a pirated version, chances are it would be the highest version possible 3). Bought it simply because it sounded more impressive 4). Actually needed the language pack features.

I bought the Win7 Home Premium Upgrade (retail) when I rebuilt/upgraded my box. The Home Premium Upgrade works fine for upgrading from XP or Vista per Microsoft, they're wanting to move users from XP to 7. It was priced at $89 along with a $10 off coupon from Newegg total cost $79. I'm very happy with Windows 7, I chose to use the 64 bit version, you get both 32 and 64 bit CD's but you can only use one version with the product key.

The upgrade version isn't less than the full version as far as functionality, if you have an OS to upgrade from it should be fine.

Well i'm thinking of building my own so I wouldn't have a OS to upgrade from. But I do think home premium will work but obviously it doesn't sound as good as ultimate does. I know it's silly but it just sounds better.

It's a great way to get a hold of alot of software and you can eval it on your home computer for personal use for as long as you want.

The least expensive licenses that are intended for installation on a new PC are System Builder (generic OEM) ones. You're supposed to sell the PC rather than keep it for personal use, but as far as I know, there is no enforcement of that.

Newegg.com - Software, Operating Systems, OEM

Home Premium, $100. Pro, $140. Ultimate, $189.

For most users, Ultimate is damned silly.

and for a system of it's caliber I think it sounds odd to have windows 7 home premium on it. Even though ultimate isn't much better than home premium.

^ Ultimate is not better or more impressive. It has bit locker (can do with True Crypt on anything) and it has language packs. If you need US English and US English only and don't care for Bit Locker, you don't need Ultimate. Those features won't make $3,000 worth of hardware any more capable.

The versions vary in features, not performance.

One thing to watch out for: Home Premium supports a maximum of 16GB of RAM. Pro and Ultimate, 192GB.

(Pro and Ultimate also support two physical CPU sockets, but few gamers build those. That's be cool, though: two eight core Xeons with hyperthreading, showing 32 logical CPUs in Windows.)

I thought that as long as the system is 64-bit it would depend on the motherboard for the maximum ram. Thanks for letting me know. Also, is the motherboard and OS the only determination of the maximum ram?

The need for more than 16GB of RAM for a normal computer user is almost non-existent. I still only run with a max of 8GB of RAM on my workstations as I haven't demonstrated the need for 16GB.

But it's obviously something to be aware of in case your needs are different.

I'd say buy what you need now and upgrade later (easy via AnyTime upgrade) if needs dictate a need for much more RAM.

True, the reason I want the ram is I just want it to be at it's maximum ram possible the first time I boot it up. Even if I don't need it immediately I just want it to have the maximum ram for later when I may need it.
