My computer died recently, so I dug out some fossil from way back to at least listen to music/watch some movies until I can buy a new one(Which won't be anytime soon). I hooked up the HDD from the dead PC to this one and everything is working OK(all things considered). However, I can't seem to be enable the sound. On paper everything seems fine even the "needles" are twitching(see image in the link) when I play an audio file but sound won't come out. The only Playback device available in the list is "Digital Audio (S/PDIF) 2- High Definiton Audio Device".

I checked the drivers and everything is up to date.
I hooked up the Speakers to the laptop they're working fine.

Help me out please, without the sound this thing is basically glorified texting machine.

Additional info.
OS: Windows 7 Shine edition 64 bit(whatever the hell that is, pirated :o )
Motherboard: Asus P5PL2

Hello and welcome gaaxure well the OS might work mate but the OS activation code is tied to the old machines motherboard so you should be getting non genuine messages from Microsoft re the system because you are using another motherboard in another machine and to boot that board may have different drivers for components on it.

So unless you have some installation media to use and that is going to mean a clean install on the old machine it is of course not going to function properly. The best suggestion I can make to you is to get a new drive and if the install media is retail then install the system over again and migrate the old drive's programs over.

Having said that Microsoft 7 Shine as you have said yourself doesn't need a lot of working out to be very out of whack - unless they put one out called that but I have never seen it.

I haven't taken that into account, thanks.

Dear Gaaxure,

Probably the problem has been solved by now. No sound for the motherboard: P5PL2 after upgrade to Windows 7. My girlfriends fathers old computer...

I just used hours with exactly the same problem, and I solved it by downloading the latest "AnalogDevices driver update for SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio" here Microsoft Update Catalog.

For used the driver from: 6/21/2009

Probably not an issue for you anymore, but maybe it helps others.

Cheers everyone!
