directory changes for portable hard drive

Hello,
I hope I'm posting this in the right forum. Recently bought a new portable with Windows 7 Pro. I have several portable hard drives that I use, two of them are almost constantly usb'd to the computer, and there are two others I use occasionally. At first the "constant" drives were called "F" and "G" drives by the computer. This was great. Even if I unhooked them and plugged them back in they remained the same. Several days ago I had to remove them and on plugging them back in to the computer they are now "H" and "I" drives. I've tried to find out where to change the directory, I think that's what the "F" and "G" are called, but can't figure it out. I would really like them to keep the same name as it's easier for me and my auto backups get goofed up when they are changed.

Hello Wildflowers, and welcome to Seven Forums.

While you have the drives connected, check in Disk Management (diskmgmt.msc)to see if you may be able to change the drive letters for them. The tutorial below is for Vista, but the procedure is the same in Windows 7.

Your suggestion worked for drive name change

Hello, Thanks so much. I just did a search in Windows 7 for the computer management file that was mentioned and was able to follow pretty much the same directions. Thanks again for a pretty simple solution that worked.

May I just add what my experience has been on this subject. I use three external hard drives that in turn are used by two PC's and a laptop. One of the PC's has a card reader and two internal hard drives and two DVD drives so when I plug one of the externals in it gets a drive letter something like "L". I have links on the Ext hard drive which go haywire from time to ime so as a solution I have given the three externals the drive letter "X", "Y", and "Z". this way there don't get reassigned lower letters
