Hello,

I'm working on windows enterprise 7 computer at work. Today I copied files from one network directory to a different network directory. When I looked at the date modified field in windows explorer it showed an older date then the files in the directory.

On one of the directories I deleted a file and that changed the date modified. I had 2 other directories that I have to manually and a delete a file in so the date modified would be updated to today date.

Usually when I add, delete or paste something into a directory the date modified is updated. I'm confused on what is causing this issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

One thing is date created and another is date modified. If you copy a directory, nothing is modified, so the date modified is the same. Right click on the menu line and choose to add date created .

Hi Megahertz07,

I'm copying files into a directory. That directories modified date should be updated to the current date and time.

How is it possible to have files with a later date then the modified date of that directory?
I had to create a dummy text file and delete it to get the modified date to change in those directories.

We use the modified date on the directories as an indicator of when we did certain data updates. This is the first time we have ever seen the modified date not change.

Thank you for your help. This is an issue I've never seen before.

This has happens with every version of Windows I've ever used.
The Date/Time attributes are basically worthless.

The "Date Accessed", "Date Created" & "Date Modified" attributes are just random gibberish.
It must be a NTFS issue.

If you want an accurate Date/Time on folders and files you have to create entirely new ones.

This method of looking at the modified date has worked for us for many years. This is the first time I can remember where the files within the directory have a newer modified date then the directory. Usually the modified date on the directory changes so we know around what date we worked on certain aspects of our project. This is the first time we have notice the directory date not update.
