Hello, I had recently purchased the game COD: Black Ops, and noticed when I had fully installed it with steam and attempted to run it, I got this error:

I don't understand this, because I had thought I did have the latest DirectX, so I went to dxdiag.exe to find out if I really did have the latest:

My friend had this same error, and he told me that he fixed it by going into steamapps\call of duty black ops\redist\directx\DXSETUP.exe so I tried it, and I got this error:

Please help, I purchased this game for quite a high price.

Oxen welcome to the Seven Forums.

Seeing as you haven't filled in your system specs, would have helped if you hadn't blocked out that info from that dxdiag screen shot. Little things like that can make it much easier to help.

As for the install error, the installer with Steam is probably using the web installer version which can (and most often is) be buggy. Try using this instead,

Download details: DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)

download, extract and run the dxsetup found in it.

I tried downloading, extracting and running DXSETUP.exe from the extracted files, but still that same error. And if it really does help, here's dxdiag.exe with most of the blocked info:

That helps some, at least it shows what motherboard you have,

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 775 - GA-G31M-S2L (rev. 1.0)

Unfortunately it doesn't show what video card you have. Hope it isn't the onboard Intel integrated graphics, as even if we get the DirectX install issue fixed the game will not run on it.

If I'm correct, Nvidia GeForce GT220 will only run on DirectX 10, and I have DirectX 11 (comes with Win7) so I'll need the download for DirectX 10 to see if it will install. The problem I'm getting with DirectX installation is version 9, that might be why.

Download link for DirectX 10 please. But I'm not very sure there's a DirectX 10 for Windows 7, so the only way to fix this is to buy a new Graphics card?

Hi Oxen, please update the directx files as suggested by stormy - Download details: DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)

In addition to that please read item#'s 5 & 6 here - Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues. It should help clarify your DirectX questions.

Let me know.

I tried that, but I still get the DirectX error when I attempt to run DXSETUP.exe "An internal system error occured. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your windows folder to determine the problem".

Right. Did you read item 6 for an explaination of DirectX 11?

I know it doesn't fix your problem, but it gives you an understanding of how the different versions work together. This way you know what's going on. The bottom line is there's no need to "downgrade" anything.

Anyway try this file and see what happens - Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer. This is the 30 Nov 2010 update.

Still didn't work. Maybe it's something wrong with my machine?

When you say it didn't work.... what does that mean? It didn't install? Did you get any errors?

This might be caused by a program. I had downloaded Black Ops off of the internet a while back, and it worked fine. I also downloaded L4D2 and it worked fine, but when I reinstalled, it didn't work.
