DirectX Installation Error

So I recently had my hard drive crash. I sent it in for repair and everything was reset to factory settings. Now none of my games (Batman arkham asylum, Total War Shogun 2, or Left 4 Dead 2) will run. It seems to be an issue with DirectX, and the games need files from DirectX 9 in order to run, I'm running Windows 7 w/ DirectX 11.

I've tried to install the missing files (DirectX Web Installer, and also Microsoft DirectX SDK Feb2010) , but I get the following error:
"An internal system error occurred. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine the problem."

I can't find the DXError.log (no idea why)

This is the DirectX.log:

Hi arch435, I could'nt get an answer to your problem either, so reverted to doing a clean install. I have done many installs and the first thing I do after installing non optional updates is to instal directX, if its successfull I know things will be OK.

Thanks for the reply Roderunner. I'm really trying to avoid a clean install, probably because I've never done one before. So i'm a little apprehensive.

I'm not sure if I've had this same exact issue, but I remember a few occasions where I couldn't install older DirectX files because of interference from my Realtek drivers. Could the same thing possibly be happening to you?

I tried updating Realtek drivers, and the install is still failing. Also tried a clean boot running only windows programs, and installation still failed.

How exactly do i do a clean install without the installation cds? My laptop came preloaded with Windows 7.

I can't seem to get DirectX to work properly. Apparently the only solution is a clean install. But how do I do that without the installation cd? Windows 7 came preloaded on my computer.

Since no one is helping, I guess I'll step in again.

Don't laptop manufacturers usually give you a bunch of CDs/DVDs with the OS and drivers on them? If not, then maybe try calling the manufacturer or whoever sold the laptop to you.

Just to let you know, I'm not really sure how to deal with this issue. I've never run into it before (my laptop came with the CDs/DVDs I mentioned before).

Hi again, sorry to have missed your post, so heres what to do.
Reboot your PC and watch the screen closely, it should show what to press to recover.

You can actually do a repair install in which you wouldn't have to reinstall your programs. Here's a tutorial - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R. Note though that you'll need an installation disk.

Thanks all,

Klaw, I didn't get any backup discs when I bought the laptop. Everything was preloaded.

Roderunner, all I can see on the boot screen is an option for SETUP and one for BOOT DEVICE SELECTION MENU. I didn't see anything under either of them that dealt with recovery.

sygnus, I not too worried about loosing my programs as I recently had the hard drive crash, sent in for service to repair the drive and reinstall the OS (which i suspect is the cause of the DirectX not installing correctly). So i want to try the clean install, but again I don't have an installation CD.

My HP Pavilion Slimline still shows Recovery option, though it has'nt been used with its original OS for 3 years. My Packard Bell Netbook does not show it. Both of them included the making of Recovery Disks.

So just an update, I contacted Lenovo to get an installation disc, so those are on the way. I guess I'll try a repair install or a clean install once they get here.

Try deleting all the temporary DirectX files, and then try installing it again (From Users > YOUR USERNAME > App Date > Local, and from the Program files if there is a file for it.

Do not go delete files like that as you will only make things worse. Also be aware that Windows 7 has DirectX files installed natively (already installed) thus you could wind up deleting the wrong files.

Does your laptop not have a restore partition where the base OS is stored? If you use that to restore they laptop to the factory condition. Once that's done, create a restore point, then try updating the DX files.

BTW that's good that Lenovo is sending you the disk. In this case I'd just wait till the disk arrive and do a clean install and go from there. And while you're at it, you might want to start looking for your hardware drivers needed should you decide to do a clean install.

Good luck.

Thanks sygnus,

How do i find all the hardware drivers I will need? As i said, I've never done reinstalled a OS before, pretty much a novice.

You're going to have to see what hardware your notebook has and find the drivers for it. A good place to look would be the notebook manufacturer. Find the model number of your notebook, look at it's hardware, and visit the downloads/drivers section and get those drivers.

Specific items are.....

Video Card
Sound card
And any other stuff like a camera, TV tuner or stuff like that.

Post a link to your notebook and I'll see if I can point you in the right direction.
