DirectX Problem

Here is the directx error I am getting:

DirectXUpdateInstallPlugIn() failed.

And...I have a new development as well. Recently my DX error logs are...not showing up. I've run several virus scans and have come up with nothing. Using both avast and microsoft security essentials, even Advanced System Care for shiggles.

I have looked and tried to find a solution but to no avail, so I am now here asking for help. I have downloaded the webinstaller, even the SDK, and neither of them will install because of the above error. And I would prefer a solution that doesn't involve formatting and reinstalling, as I do not have my disk for windows 7 anymore.

Welcome to Seven Forums.
I'm no DirectX person, but it seems you are using an updater from 2006?

No, i've used the webinstaller and downloaded the SDK as well. But I always get that same error.

There are multiple problems here:

1.) DO NOT USE 2 antivirus programs. Uninstall avast or Microsoft security essentials. You cannot have 2 antivirus scanners. I would keep avast personally.

2.) Get rid of Advanced System Care. This is completely unnecessary software. These programs always do more harm then good.

We need more information:

1.) What are you trying to do? More detail please.
2.) What program are you in that is giving you this error?
3.) Are you trying to update direct x? If so, Its not necessary anymore since xp. Your getting that error because in vista onward direct x cannot be upgraded majorly.

Vista is direct x 10, windows 7 is direct x 11, and so on....

Every time I try to install directX, or it attempts to install VIA a game installation process, it fails to happen. Basically, I'm a gamer and this is becoming a giant pain in the rear and is causing me to jump through hoops on a regular basis.

If a game attempts to install Dx9, then it was written for XP or earlier - and you should install it using compatibility settings.

As far as your current problems are concerned, ASC may well have done a lot of damage.-




SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.


Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

I don't see where it was requested, I assume you ran sfc /scannow? Good to know you got it solved.

You had a large number (66) of file corruptions in the SYSWOW64 subfolder - it's probably these that caused your problems.
SFC claims to have fixed them all now.
