Hi All

My external HDD has quite a lot of data contained in the system volume information folder.

System restore is not active on this drive & the drive is used specifically for imaging purposes I was wondering if there was a method of emptying & disabling this folder.

Any wise assistance offered would be appreciated.

System Volume Information folder (SVI) contains windows system restore files.
There is no need to enable System Restore for external drives.

To delete the system restore files from your external drive follow the procedure below.

Open Windows Explorer
1. Disable System Restore and Indexing for the drive.
2. Make sure data encryption is not enabled.
3. Take ownership and allow full control to SVI folder and its contents.
4. Right click on the External drive and select properties, click Disk Clean up on the General Tab, Click on More Options tab, then click Clean-up in System Restore and Shadow Copies. This will empty the SVI folder.
5. Delete SVI directory for good.
6. Create an empty file with a name "System Volume Information". Set the file's attributes to "System" and "Hidden" to tuck away the file from view.

This will prevent System Volume Information folder from getting recreated again.
