disable multicore usage automatically

is there any way i can set the multiple core usage for certain application automatically when i open them. my laptop get hot really fast once i open few program at the same time

You can manually set the processor affinity for a program like this, but once you close the application or restart your system, Windows forgets your set affinity and automatically sets back the default affinity of the application running on all available cores of the processor.

Hi,

Im not sure how much this will achieve, but you could try the following:

1. Open Task Manager
2. Click the "Processes" tab
3. Find the executable for your application under the column called "Image Name"
4. Right-click on the executable, and select the "Set Affinity" option
5. Remove the ticks from the processors you do not want to use.

See attached image.

Longer term you may want to invest in a cooling option (e.g. USB cooling pad) for your laptop, or give it a good clean.

yup thats the problem, when restart the pc it will set back to the default processor affinity. need to redo whole things from the begining. kinda time consuming.

hi golden. currently I am using notepal u2 for my laptop, it help a bit by reducing 2~3 c . need to disable lot apps if I want to play NFS or even CS . my dell 1464 will start to shutdown itself after 10 minutes ++ of playing.

Your could also do what's in post #7 there to create a .bat file to be able to run the program's exe file with the processor affinity you set in it.

Agreed. You would be much better off to improve temps by increasing airflow with better fan cooling, and to blowout the vents with a can of compressed air.

There is a utility called Prio that will allow you to set the affinity and per program priority. And it remembers the settings through re-boots.

It is accessed from within Task Manager, so it's very convenient.

As the posts above suggest it may or may not help your temperature issues.

thanks for the suggestion. the software work as advertised it saved priority setting but not affinity. good alternative to setup any software that run background update such as adobe or win update.

I must admit that I've never changed the affinity settings, so I didn't know.
From my experience, the priority settings are definitely retained between boots.

That's good news. For more reference, these might be helpful as well for priority settings instead of just affinity settings. The context menu options can help make it easier to set them instead of going through Task Manager.

I found this program while doing some research on a problem in my office. It allows you to change the affinity of any program. It's called CPU-Control. here's the link: www.koma-code.de - CPU-Control (Win 98/2000/XP/Vista/7) hope it helps. If it doesn't, I have an older program I found a few years ago that I know will lock in any program to the affinity you need. It's called set affinity. I can't seem to find it at this point. Last I saw it was about 4 years ago.

You can try looking at the power settings. Then go to Advanced Settings and look at the settings under "Processor Power Management".

You may be able to reduce the Maximum Processor State to 75% or something to keep the temps down...
