I woke up, started the computer and the computer would keep going to the Hp start page and then a few seconds later to a black screen with "disc read error" and hit ctrl/alt/del

I have since successfully booted the computer, but have read that this could be just the start, how can I find a fix the problem before its too late?

Hi 6Dad6. Welcome to the forum.

The first task you need to do is backup your data from that hard drive. Do this right away - Do not pass Go - Do not collect $200.

After you have secured your data, then run a hard drive diagnostic test on the hard drive. Every* manufacturer has one on their website. If you know the brand of hard drive in that HP someone can point you to the correct one.

See what the tests show before deciding which way to go next.

*Well, almost every one!
