Disc won't play in computer, does in CD player. How can I fix this?

I have some used audio CDs I want to rip. Some of them are scratched so much that none of my computers recognize them. However, regular CD players can read them fine.

I'm thinking maybe the reason for this is that an error at 48x is 48 times worse than one at 1x. I tried to find some programs to slow down the speed of my disc drive to see if that would solve the problem, but I wasn't able to find any that could actually do that on my computer.

Have any of you had a similar issue? Do you know a program that would actually work to slow down my disc drive? Do you think I'm on the right track? Thanks.

Hello Weboh mate I see two options one is you clean the disks you trying to rip I do that with a product called Silvo which is a water/rubbing alcohol based solution/cream and a lot of elbow grease using a lint free microweave cloth and two you could try replacing the drive it is very simple to do just usually one screw and slip out the old and in with the new and screw back in.

Now as general rule (I am not sure about ripping but) burning is always best done at the slowest speed available. That is possible when using software like ImgBurn

Now there is probability some sort of software available for controlling the rip speed but I don't personally know of any, and having said that if the disk is that bad then I don't think any rip speed will do the job for you. .

Since the CD player will play the CDs, this could be just what you need in order to rip the CDs.

Yeah, I have a computer with a microphone port, so I could just use that with the CD player. I'd rather not rip 10 CDs at 1x though. Might end up having to do that though.

I already cleaned the discs but it's not helping the computer read them. None of my computers read them either, so I know it's not a problem with the drive.

Now there is probably some sort of software available for controlling the rip speed but I don't personally know of any, and having said that if the disk is that bad then I don't think any rip speed will do the job for you.

But the disc isn't so bad that a regular CD player can't read it. That's why I think it might have something to do with the drive speed.

Yep well mate I don't know what to suggest because those drives run at set speeds as you know and the ripping well I would have thought if you could control it 16x would be a fair speed.

The lower speeds such as 2x and 4x are necessary if you are burning ISO's for example to prevent corruption of data.

The drive plugged into the microphone jack mate might be a tad excessive as those inputs are extremely sensitive and I would only use a USB connection.

I think that since a CD player is designed to play CDs and nothing else, it will play CDs better than a computer CD/DVD drive. That is why I believe you will have more success with a CD player than with trying to fix whatever issue there is with the computer CD/DVD drive.

You should use your "Line In" input rather than your "Microphone" input to connect the CD player to your computer. The reason for this is that "Line In" is designed to work with an amplified signal, while "Microphone" is not. Damage could result if you connect your CD player to the "Microphone" input, unless you use an adapter that reduces (attenuates) the signal.

Based on the comments for this cable, I don't know if this is a stereo cable or a mono cable. But I used something just like this in college to record from a headphone jack to my cassette recorder. I used the microphone input on the cassette recorder, with an attenuating adapter, and the recordings were excellent. If I recorded without the attenuation (reduction) on the signal, there was a lot of distortion in the recording.

AS both Jim and I have said mate the mic input is way to sensitive for anything else but a microphone and I think Jim's suggestion of an external drive is really worth a shot and they are not expensive these days internal or external.
