my connection to the internet is constantly and randomly lost, however i do not lose connection to the router, how can i overcome this problem?

i think there are 3 maybe 4 wireless connections to it, and 2 or 3 ethernet connections (in total)
it is a Dlink router

If it is an older router [say 3 - 5 years in most cases plus] it could be the chips in it are starting to go. Other than that you are asking a very vague question without much info. For instance if you use DSL and PPOE I would blame the ISP as DSL and PPOE SUCK].

It could be if you are gaming for instance and it goes to say join a lobby and list all servers available some routers have issues with their coding and a mem leak happens after soo many simultaneous TCP connects happen at once [usually indicated by if connection is dropped and you appear offline then you have to power cycle [turn the router off and then back on] to fix it then you may want to check the manufacturers site for any firmware upgrades [or like my father who LOVES CoD 2 on the PC still broke down and ended up buying a new router]. If this is your fix I HIGHLY recommend you stick with the Cisco [Linksys for home equipment] branded routers as they tend to be best.

You could try checking out DD-WRT [replacement firmware that can give you access to settings the manufacturer hides I LVOE THIS I USE A LINKSYS WRT54G as a client bridged to my ISPs wireless router and have MUCH better and FASTER connection then ever before [my computer is cabled to a LAN port and DD-WRT bridges the wired and wireless connections together BEAUTIFULLY, you can setup DNS Masqing and even Antenna Biases. Shoot it even can be setup to run Cron Jobs [if some of this goes over your head suffice it to say this firmware is VERY capable and HIGHLY recommended and if you know nothing else I logged in clicked wireless clicked site survey chose my wireless network plugged in the password and it setup the connection for me]

Unless you have experience with reprogramming routers, I would suggest not doing so.

I would suggest opening a command prompt, and pinging www.google.com -t, and seeing if your pings go through.

> press the windows key and r
> type cmd in the box that comes up
> type ping www.google.com -t

When your connection drops, see if the pings continue. Also, what do you define as a connection dropping? Do web pages quit loading, skype isn't functioning? The more information you can give me, the better help I can give you. :)

If your computer can still get to the router and to other PC on your network it isn't your computer. It is the WAN section of your router or your ISP is dropping the connection.

when the internet connection is lost i cannot open webpages, play online games, email, anything to do with the internet.

i havent actually done it with this router, but on my old DLink DSL i was able lose the internet "deliberately" by download like 10 things at once through bittorrent, that stopped the internet every time and may be the same sort of thing with this router.

As silly as this sounds, have you tried something simple like pulling the plug on the router and leaving it powered down for a minute to reset it. I had a d-link once that after a period of weeks would start to act up until I reset the power to it then it would be fine. Also do you have the latest firmware installed for your model of router?

Well that may explain it. It this a shared internet connection then it could be everyone is using all the bandwidth. You may still be connected but it is so slow because of everyone else downloading/uploading surfing whatever that it only looks like it is disconnected.
Then again the router might be hung because of all the traffic. It just can't handle all of it.

What are you going to follow me to each thread and mention re-programming a router is not a good idea? dude I am telling him to go to the manufacturers site get the Firmware upgrade file from them then log-in to said router go to firmware upgrade page click browse, choose file, and click flash so he has the latest version of the router manufacturers firmware. This is no different than upgrading Windows or your computers BIOS to get the latest updates to fix issues and gain more performance. I just said that if the company does not have one for that model ask them to send a new router that may not be soo old and been through soo much over heating [routers are like comps and have fans and dust gets in and heat causes the chips to have issues [especially the memory chips most often causing them to go bad and cause a "memory leak" where it tries to use a bad memory address the data comes back bad and the whole thing freezes with lights flashing appears to be working but it is frozen. Trust me I have gone through this very situation with Comcast and Verizon and most often you call in they take you through their BS [keep asking them to run a TCP connection limit test if you need to as that is what causes this issue most often if it is what I am reffering to] not to mention the owner of the connection usually is renting the router from the ISP and they will just send you another FREE one anyways.

As suggested above you want to see if you can ping your own computers on the network [if you can the router is still working fine, and it is the ISPs connection

hold down windows key and tap r type cmd click OK in black and white window type ipconfig and hit enter
now type ping <enter IP address for your GATEWAY HERE> -t [you dont have to do the -t that just means keep pinging until you close window or hit ctrl+c [or ctrl+pause break]]

this will basically have you ping your router [you could also right click your network adapter icon by your system clock choose to open your network and sharing center here on the top of the window should be a graphic and you should see a line between your computer to your network and another to a globe that says internet. If any red Xs appear between your network and internet your router is prolly good your ISP connection is bad or if one appears between your comp and the router it has frozen and you can power cycle the router to restart it and it runs until tge next time it has an issue] or continuing and under connections on right single left click on the name Local Area Connection [that will bring up a status window and click the details button for same info] OR you could download a desktop widget from Microsoft to check your EXTERNAL IP and if it finds one and then goes blank later it can't see the internet. This is all within Windows 7 as that is the OS I am currently logged in to.

All this to not only try and help, but also demonstrate the thoroughness and completeness for which I strive [for instance I could walk through some Win XP checks instead of having to use ipconfig, but won't until I sit down in front of XP and can ensure my step-by-step is completely correct before posting].

Hope all this helps, and as with most savant type techs sorry for the long winded explanation, it just helps to avoid mis-understandings and I strive to hopefully teach a bit as we go so you may begin to find you are able to start figuring things out using the knowledge already shared ;-) ]

@commodore pet pulling the power does bring back the internet, this is what i must do but it continues to happen after.

@shootlist the internet is gone completely when it happens not slowed down, when i hover the mouse over the connections icon it says "no internet connection", and as ambrosial proposed in network sharing centre the cross is between the internet and modem not computer and modem.

i will do the ping thing when it happens again, it hasnt done it the last couple of days.
