Disgrace!

This "upgrade" from Vista to W7 is a total and utter disgrace that would be fraud in other areas of commerce. I paid good money(£55 +VAT) for a product that does not work. The upgrade advisor said my system was more than capable, I removed unsuitable programmes and ran the thing - twice I get to near the end and it crashes out returning me to Vista. I then read that I have to almost dismantle my PC, remove memory, change cables etc, etc... no! no! no! It should either work or not...
How can I get my money back?:mad::mad:

Remove memory? I must admit to being curious as to why.

I don't really want to do a clean install - I bought this as an upgrade as it says on the box.

A clean install always works better.

Clean install also gives you more value for the money you saved by buying an Upgrade version.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

An in-place Upgrade you seek is a corruption path in and of itself. If there was ever a time to clean install, it is now with the greatest OS ever.

You'll never need to reinstall again, either. Just save a Win7 Backup Image externally and you can reimage your HD or a replacement flawlessly in 20 minutes.

That said, MS tech support has the specific fixes for the in-place Upgrade failures which should be taken as an omen to clean install.

With the UOne important point to keep in mind, the Upgrade Advisor can only give you an indication of whether or not your hardware is powerful enough to run 7, the compatibility checker side of it is not that reliable. I came across an issue with one of my friend's computers; he saw 7 on my PC and wanted to try it... All went well with the install, but once in Windows (running x64) it was horribly unstable and slow... The x86 version runs perfectly (just doesn't use all his RAM), but x64 just simply doesn't like his machine. His hardware is more than capable of running Win7; AMD 6000+, Asus M3N78-VM, 4GB DDR2-800, etc.

Here's another suggestion; if you have enough space on a separate drive (external maybe?) to backup your C:\ partition, why don't you make a Ghost image of your current Vista installation first? That is, of course, assuming your Vista installation still runs properly?

There are two benefits to doing this: firstly, if 7 really doesn't like your PC then you can restore the image and be back with Vista as though nothing had changed, and secondly, if 7 does work you can use Ghost Explorer PE to browse the image and access any data stored in the image.

@ZaLiTH. Thanks that sounds interesting. I have heaps of HD space both int. and ext.
How does one do this "ghost" image and Ghost explorer PE? also do I need to partition the HDD? Sorry but as you can see I'm to too techie!
My Vista is running fine and I do wonder why I got into this tangle...

I'm not certain if this is the same version that I have at home, but you can download Norton Ghost from the Symantec website (link removed, see below). I can't seem to find a download for Ghost Exploer though, I suspect that may only be a part of the paid-for Ghost Solution Suite.

There is a comprehensive instructional document in the zip file with the iso file, but if you need any further help with it, let me know.

Edit:
Ok, I've decided to do it a different way; I tried the tools that were available from the Symantec website and they're way too cumbersome and confusing. I have uploaded the Ghost Boot CD image that I've used for years to my 4Shared account (link), this one I know works and if you need help at least then I'm more able to assist.
