I have a problem with the Chkdsk program. Last Monday out of the blue it decided to run a check on the hard drive, screen looked somewhat like the second last one in
There weren't any completed percentage or how much was left percentage appearing on the screen. After 2 hours I pulled the plug and reinstalled Windows 7. After reinstalling, being curious, I decided to configure my pc to run the check at restart and the same problem occured: no indication as to how much had been checked or how much was left was shown on the screen. I let the program run for 4 hours yesterday at which time the screen had gone all dim. The 10 seconds time you have to abort the check is no use because the program doesn't seem to react to my keyboard. I've had no prior problems with this 2-month-old laptop.
I just called customer support and they said reinstall Windows 7 and deactivate antivirus (I have avast 5) software and then try disk check. Has ditching antivirus software or firewall helped anyone if the disk check hasn't worked? They said those could meddle with the function of check disk.
I remember back in the day whenever I ran a disk check and disk defragment I would shut off every service except for those that were absolutely neccesary to run the scans. I'm guessing it's still the same. Any program that is going to edit the disk while you're checking it is going to cause problems. Imagine trying to scan a drawing when it's still being drawn.
Turn off all programs not necessary for system function
Unplug internet (Safety)
Run Disk Check
If running disk check during restart:
Your programs shouldn't be affecting disk check this way, the reason it makes you schedule it for later is because it cant scan the HDD while programs are running and editing the disk. The only thing I can think of is a broken installation or a corrupt HDD.
I'm running the check at restart so Windows shouldn't be running (black screen and text saying sth like "the check is on ....you have 10 s to cancel the check" and "you have 1 s to cancel the check" and the nothing. Of course canceling by pressing any key doesn't work. The check didn't work for factory installation nor the reinstall I made last Monday. Mere repair install won't help because I can't log on to Windows in the first place. I guess I'll take my pc to see the doctor at this point. Thanks for the reply =)
2 hours? Depending on the drive, chkdsk had barely started. On large drives, chkdsk can easily take many hours - even more than a full day. You should have just let it run, even if it appeared to be frozen.
