Disk drive not showing up

I recently realized that my computer is not recognizing my disk drive. The drive is a TS-L632 and I'm using it in an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC dv6864ca. I've had the computer for several years. It came with Windows Vista Home Premium, but I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional. The problem did NOT start with the new os. Everything worked fine for months before this happened. I know the drive has power, and when I put a disk in it spins, but the drive does not show up in My Computer or the device manager, and nothing will run. I've tried going back to a restore point, tried a registry fix I've seen mentioned in a few places (I've included the steps I followed below), and run virus and spyware scans. Nothing's working for me, and unless I get a sudden breakthrough I'm going to have to turn this one over to the professionals. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Note: I undid these registry changes after it was clear they weren't working.

<<"iTunes installs a system level CD ROM driver, called GEARAspiWDM.sys. This driver is used by iTunes to burn CDs. The problem, however, is it caused your ROM drives to toss a driver signature problem in control panel (yellow ! on the devices). The fix is to search for the key in the registry. Unforunately I already made the change and closed the registry, so I can't tell you the exact key, but do a search for that file name. You're looking for a key called upperfilter. When you find it, double click that key and delete that filename. Then, remove your ROM devices and let Windows redetect them.

This is what worked for me. BTW, it's really cool that someone tossed this site up to help people. It didn't specifically help me, but I hope it helps others.
The entry in question is....

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

Delete upperfilters and lowerfilters. I didnt have lowerfilters on my machine, but deleting the upperfilters worked a treat.">>

You try re-installing the driver, or blowing out the drive with canned air?

That's a Toshiba model that saw a 2008 firmware update. Unfortunately the OS requirements besides Windows as to the compatibility with the 64bit 7 is unknown. Content Details

Since the drive itself seems to be in working order the next item to consider would be the ide data cable presently in use. If the cable has lost continuity and needs to be replaced the drive simply won't be seen as it should with a good cable in. This has always been a problem typically seen with ide hard drives as well as optical drives.

Old flat ribbon type cables tend to stiffen up a bit and end up being intermittant often. Some round ide cables are cheaply made and should be avoided however.
