Solved Disk needs to be checked for consistency

I am currently having an issue. When ever I start up my PC, the following message appears:

Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is ACER.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.
To skip disk checking, press any key within 1 second(s).

This message counts down to 1 second and freezes. I tried leaving it for 4 hours today as I went for school. Came home, and it was still on this screen. As I said, every time I start up my computer, this message appears and I am forced to force shut down the computer if I do not hit a key in time.

I am wondering if there is an alternative, recommended option to run this disk check to avoid skipping this message every startup.

Thanks in advance.
Sean

If you can boot into Windows and have an Internet connection download startupcpl from MIke Lin's page and install it. This will give you a new icon in your control panel named 'Startup'. Run it and go to the RunOnce tab. You should see the link. Delete it and reboot.

The only other way to do this would be run\regedit and do a search for 'Runonce' and delete the entry from there.

Would this simply just be bypassing this disk check? As it says, it is strongly recommended I run it. Should I not be doing so?

Hi Sean

I had the same problem on an acer notebook and discovered something was jumping in on boot and preventing the disk check from running as the disk was in use.

In Regedit navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
Go to Edit then new and add a new DWORD (32bit) VALUE and name it AutoChkTimeOut and leave the data column as 0.
Go to file then exit and reboot

This will stop the 10 second countdown on reboot and the disk check will start immediately.

Worked for me anyway

Danny

Edit I think it has to be with the capitals as follows AutoChkTimeOut

I was having the exact same problem where the timer would get stuck at 1. Yours was the first solution I found that seemed to make sense so I tried it and bypassing the timer worked perfectly. Thanks!

I get the same message and the computer just stops. I let it run all night to be sure.

It stops on a screen that says File Record segments 534759 is unreadable. (of a long list)

I had to shut it down with the on/off switch. I keep getting the same thing. When I reboot, the message says hit any key within 10 seconds to stop the check, but it does not work. I tried to start in safe mode and it went straight to the check. I don't know what to do since I seem to be in a loop here.
