Whenever I turn on my computer, the windows logo shows up, but after that, the screen stays dark. If I put the computer to sleep with the keyboard and wake it up again, it goes right to the welcome screen. I have XP installed on the same computer, and this problem never occurs when using it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

After the windows logo, the screen stays dark, no screensaver, nothing. The graphics driver works fine after I put the computer to sleep and wake it back up; something seems to be wrong with the driver on initial bootup. I have a Geforce Go 7900 GS.

Welcome to seven forums artillerydude: You can try modding your graphics card inf with this program. The fact that it doesn't happen in safe mode leads me to brelive it is driver related. Your card is listed and has had success in the past. Fabe NVIDIA MobilityModder - DriverHeaven.net

Under system devices, there are three devices that have issues:

  • PCI Standard ISA Bridge: Previous instance of driver is still in memory (Code 38)
  • Base System Device
  • Base System Device
Could these be causing the problem?

Your base system device is your sd card reader and most likely your touch pad. I would suggest you make sure you also have the latest chipset drivers for your system. And are you using the lates 195.62 driver for your card? Lets see what happens once you have fixed the 3 problems listed above then go from their. Fabe

I looked through the event viewer and there are no errors involving the display or video card drivers or anything related. I do have something to add though: when I shut down the computer, the screen goes blank and HDD access stops, but the computer doesn't shut all the way down - the lights are still on; I have to hold down the power button to get it to go the rest of the way off. Could this be related the original problem?

My first day posting on the forum... long, and possibly redundant, but I hope it helps somebody with the "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" Pop-up as well as the Black Screen after wake up issue...

After a new PC build with a fresh install of Windows 7/64bit (build7600)... I saw the pop-up for the 1st time while troubleshooting some nvidia driver updates -- while putting my newly installed 3D apps through their paces, things would go black momentarily, but then come back with the "Display driver stopped..." message. I suspect I had conflicting video driver files or registry settings. ( I was experimenting with more than one driver versions)
All troubles seemed to go away after uninstalling everything nvidia related (everything); running Guru3d.com's 'Driver Sweeper' after a boot to SAFE MODE; ...and finally a regular reboot and fresh install of the latest and greatest nvidia driver (Forceware 191.66)

All was right with the world until...
Black screen with a lonesome mouse arrow pointer after waking the system from sleep. I, like many folks I've read about, hear the system fans/disk powering up as normal, though little to show for it apart from the mouse pointer moving about.
My first impulse was to bring up the 'Windows Task Manager' which I prefer to do using Shift+Ctrl+Esc (rather than Ctrl+Alt+Del) ...I then noticed a subtle screen flicker and then presto, my desktop was back! ...along with the familiar pop-up about "Display driver stopped etc..."
This Task Manager call up worked nicely to resolve the black screen upon wake up trouble, but it lead me to suspect that since the system was coming up fine, but minus the graphics card/driver, there may be something screwy with all the new-fangled power saving features and settings that try to optimize power efficiencies on devices such as cpu/fans/HDs/graphics boards/etc.

So...
I seemed to have resolved both my black screen issue AND the "Display driver stopped..." alert by changing an advanced power setting related to the PCI Express slot within 'Power Options'.

Control Panel --> Power Options --> Select Power Plan
> Change Plan Settings (I kept it at 'Balanced')
>> Change Advance Power Settings
>>> (expand to) PCI Express
>>>> (expand to) Link State Power Management
>>>>> (select) OFF
Apply.

I would think that choosing 'High performance' power plan would work just as well (if not better), but I'd check the default PCI Express setting just the same.

While I was at it, after reading about some further Wake up issues, I also set...
Change Advance Power Settings > Sleep >> Allow Wake Timers >>> Settings: DISABLE

This worked for me. ...until of course it doesn't.

Hope to be useful.

Hi there, a desperate fellow first time posting looking for a solution to the same problem, heres my story:

I had WinVista 32 and it worked fine, it was new years and right past midnight I shut my computer off normally, when I wake up the other day I notice weird squares all over the initial Toshiba (I have a Satellite P105-S9337) and intel logos and boom....blackscreen listed above followed by a bluescreen which said dumping physical memory to disk at the bottom of the screen and FAULT_IN_NONPAGE_AREA at the top.

Was able to run it on Safe Mode, made a Backup and yesterday installed Win7 Ultimate x64, noticed the squares where still there, but i can boot it up normally (YAY half of the problem solved!!:geek:). Then i noticed This was listed in Device Manager: Display Adapters--> Standard VGA Graphic Adapter(I got a Nvidia GeForce Go 7900GS as our chap above) This is also there with a ! sign: Mass Storage Device and Unknown Device under the Other Devices tab(though I'd like the focus on my video card problem for now please :D)

So i ruled everything out and we got a pretty obvious driver problem, since then ive tried inumerous drivers (Given the one the Nvidia site found for me on the download drivers page is not even supported by my video card and it still showed up there as a driver for the 7900GS ).
Though Ive read posts here from people who got the same Video Card saying Win7 runs like a charm since a clean install.

Notes: This Started with the OS as WinVista 32.
I ran a clean Win7 Ultimate 64 Install.
Windows Update has a go at a Nvidia GeForce Go7900GS Driver update, right after that, I return to the blackscreen issue and when I'm able to boot it again it reverts changes
Thank you all for your help!

Ok here goes. I'm at my wits end, this is driving me nuts. I have an Aurora M9700 Alienware laptop with an AMD processor and Nvidia 7900 GS with 512MB. this was working fine with XP Pro 32Bit. I formated the HD and installed 7 64bit. As soon as i installed the Nvidia drivers all looks good, i reboot and see the windows logo, so far so good. then it goes black, i know its loging in cause i hear the familiar audio associated with getting a desktop.

I have read and tried DblGlazed7's post to no avail. There has to be something i'm missing??
