Hello all

I am new to this forum and this is my first posting.

I I have a Sony Vaio Laptop 14 inch display with a native resolution of 1600x900. I find the text etc. too small. If I used the display scaling to 125% it becomes satisfactory.

My doubt is when the display is scaled to 125%, is my resolution lowered to 1366x768? Or is it just the text & other objects alone being scaled, and my display resolution still remains 1600x900?

Thanks in advance
Best regards
PRSS

Lowering display resolution and increasing display scaling both result in larger display elements but the methods and the quality of the results are quite different.

The old CRT monitors were physically capable of displaying a variety of display resolutions. But modern flat screen monitors have a specific native resolution and can't really display any other. You can change the display resolution in the display properties but this doesn't change the monitors resolution. Instead, when you lower the resolution the display drivers draw everything larger. But this is done at a very primitive level that has no knowledge of what is being drawn. Visually the results are often not fully satisfactory.

Increasing the display scaling usually produces better results, particularly with text. In this case the system software and often the application are involved in the process. Most text can be scaled up to very larger sizes with no loss in quality. With images in many cases a larger image with more detail is used. The results can be very good, particularly with applications designed to handle this. Some applications, mostly older ones, may have some issues. In some cases text may not fit the available space. This is more common with display scaling of 1.5 and up, such as might be used with large high resolution monitors.
