Solved Display showing a bit bigger than my screen

Hi,

I first thought it was Firefox becuase I first noticed it after a FF update and I couldn't see the top right X to close the browser. I had to make it a smaller window, which I could JUST do, as I could just about see the bottom of the Minimize button, and the Make-window-smaller button.

But then I noticed the top row of my icons on the desktop were half disappeared too.

And the icons down the side have been clipped. The start button is clipped and I can only just see the edge of the Desktop button on the far bottom right task bar.

And when I use any programs the same thing happens.

I have not changed Display settings. I don't have a Widescreen on my main PC. I prefer the more square screen. It's always set to 1280 x 1024.

Does anyone know how I can rectify it please?

Hello RealGem,

You might double check your DPI scaling level settings to see if it's still set at the default 96 DPI (100%). Higher values will make everything appear larger.

Hi Brink,

Thank you for that page. I have always had it set on Medium (125%) and the larger icons never caused clipping at the edge of the screen before.

But I changed it to Smaller just now and although the icons were smaller, the clipping was worse. So I changed it to Bigger (150%) - (logging off each time), and the clipping was less than before, but still clipping a bit.

So the first part of the page did not work.

Is it worth me doing the second part?

Or is changing the DPI manually in Registry Editor just another way of achieving the same result?

No need to manually change DPI in the registry. Both options do the same thing, but just different ways of doing it.

Is the screen resolution you're using the "recommended" one?

Yes it's the recommended one. The highest resolution for my monitor.

My PC is still usable, but I can't maximize any windows, so it's a bit inconvenient. I have to have them slightly smaller than the screen. This makes YouTube pages think i am on a mobile device and puts all the "related videos" at the top under the main video and before the comments, which drives me nuts!

I will try System Restore but I haven't made a restore point for ages, so that might not work.

It is only showing a Restore point for 2 days ago, and it started happening about 5 days ago.

Do you know of any other solutions please?

To check:
1) Right click on desktop.
2) Click on NVIDIA Control Panel
3) Click on Help on menu bar
4) Click on System Information.
5) Look for "Driver version" under "Details" in the "Display" tab. like below.

Yes 390.65 that is what I have got. I edited my last post and downloaded the latest version and installed.

Then I Restarted my PC.

Sadly it didn't make a difference

I did a screenshot to show you how the screen is clipped but it didn't work! It included the whole image. It must have known I selected top right to bottom left, so it showed the whole pic.

The second two I took on my phone to show the clipping. Notice bottom right how the Desktop icon is hidden in the 2nd and 3rd pics:

It looks like your display settings are fine.

The opened windows need to be resized (drag borders) to fit better on your screen.

The desktop icons can be dragged back down to be full on-screen. An easy way is to:

1) Right click on desktop.
2) Click on "View" and "Align to grid" if "Align to grid" is not checked.

Yes that's what I've done so far. But to drag the borders in I have to turn Maximize Window off. This makes web pages think I'm on a mobile device. Like I said it's not unusable but is an inconvenience.

I noticed that your using a classic theme.

You might test using one of the default Windows themes to see if that could be related.

I don't know if this applies to Nvidia cards or not, but with older Radeon cards there was a setting for flat panel scaling, where you could overscan your monitor by 10% if necessary. It was used to make up for the screen shrinkage when using an HDMI cable.

To my knowledge, it is not used anymore, but perhaps the Nvidia driver has something similar? I don't know, because I don't use Nvidia, but it would seem worthwhile to check. If it's there, perhaps the setting got altered somehow.

Thanks I have used this theme since I got the PC in 2011. So it can't be that.

I heard the fancy graphics ones used more power.

Did you try the screen (monitor) settings? I've seen screens that had a zoom that the image was out of the screen.
