DivX Web Player

I just attempted to play a movie online, but the viewer window just displays a black screen with a VLC icon in the middle of it. Apparently, it requires using the DivX player rather than VLC. I downloaded and installed the player, but that changed nothing. I checked the movie file itself, which is avi, but when checking the MIME type preference for download in my browser, I did not find avi listed.

I could download the movie file itself and probably play it with the main DivX player installation, but I would like to be able to play it within the browser. How do I do that?

Just to be sure seekermeister, this is a legit video on a legit site and not a site with keyloggers and/or driveby downloads that ask you to install shifty 'video players/codecs' to play their videos right?

I do apologize if this seems like a kinda stupid question.

I'm trying to install the DivX Player, which is not some kind of malware.

EDIT: Actually it is not the installation that is the problem, it is as I said...setting the MIME types in the browser (Opera), so that the browser will use the proper plugin.

I did some checking on the Opera forum, and apparently this is because Opera doesn't recognize avi as a MIME type. Therefore it does not hand it off as it should, even though DivX is listed among the Opera plugins. I don't quite understand that, since IE will play the avi video within the browser itself. IE will hand it off to DivX, but I think it does so through some kind of activex.
