DNS and Multiple IP Errors

I have tried solving this on my own but finally admitted that I do not know enough.

I have a D-Link router that I personally own. I am renting a modem from my ISP/cable provider, Grande Communications. I am very near just giving up the principle and paying $10 a month to rent a router from them as well. They have come out and determined it is not the modem and since I own the router, they won't help me with it.

My internet constantly goes out. When I try to troubleshoot the issue, I get a response saying there is a DNS server lookup error. I also occasionally get a notification saying there are multiple devices on the network with the same IP address.

Also frustrating, I have one connection display which shows I have a full connection while another that says I do not (picture attached).

When working, my upload/download speeds are correct. I pay for 30 download and 3 upload. The test I ran shows 28.59 download and 3.12 upload speeds.



Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If I can't fix this by the New Year, I am going to just give in and rent a router from Grande.

The ipconfig shows that you have a valid IP and should be online. Have you tried to change the DNS servers in your routers settings?

You should try using Google DNS for now at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 , type those into the settings for DNS server in your routers set up page.

It would also be helpful if you can post a screen shot of the read out from Xirrus WiFi inspector, link below.

My mistake

I apologize for the confusion. Every now and then after resetting my modem and router, it will begin to work. I guess I ran my config query when it was working so that I could then post it -not realizing that it wouldn't show a problem when it was working.

Alas, it stopped working again and I ran the config query before unplugging/resetting my modem and router. Here are the results:

And it's still showing that you are online with a valid IP, which brings us back to my original questions in the first post.

Which A/V software?

Have you tried to change the DNS servers by going into your routers settings and typing in the DNS servers you want to use like my earlier suggestion of typing in Google's DNS servers.

It would also be helpful if you can post a screen shot of the read out from Xirrus WiFi inspector, link below.

Yes i had the same problem as you, had to use a different DNS server such as google as chev65 stated 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 or you can look online for other ones, the IP conflict is from anti-virus software had the same problem but when the ballon pops up just click on it and it should fix it for you or just change you ip address to a higher one like 192.xxx.x.200. Because your router prop has it starting off from .100 up

You should first disable the real time protection in Spybot.

There should be a DNS setting in the routers control panel some where but all routers use a different UI so can't give exact directions here.

If you can't figure out the routers settings then you can add the DNS servers to your IPv4 properties.

Just go the wireless adaptor in the Network and Sharing center, highlight it then right click and choose properties, then scroll down to TCP/IPv4, right click and choose properties button, click to use the following DNS server then type in the Google DNS server IP's at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and save.

I also need to see the Xirrus read out.

I couldn't ever find the DNS settings on the router page, so I made the change through the Network and Sharing center. Thanks for the work around. For some reason I can't even load my router settings page now, although other pages work.

I also can't install the Xirrus program. I have tried twice and I get an error both times. I can post the log but it is is massive.

If you can't access your router and you can't even install Xirrus then it's likely that you have problems other than just with your network. Could be a virus or many other things.

You might try running the sfc/scannow command to see if there are file integrity problems.

If you can't get into your router seems to be a bigger problem like chev said. Maybe you should try pinging your router to see if it is responding, by using the ping command (ping 192.168.0.1) then if it talk's back, you should try talking to google by the web address (ping www.google.com) then if tahts doesn't and does to (ping 74.125.132.99) then it's just a dns error but if it doesn't talk to either of the URL or the Ip of google, its a bigger problem
