About a month ago I had to reinstall windows because I got a virus (unfortunately). The first week it was all swell but then I started getting these strange DNS errors. I have no clue how to fix it, I've tried changing the DNS servers to the Google ones and the cmd ipconfig /flushdns fix. I don't know what else to do.

Also, it's very strange but this issue only happens when I try to use a web browser. When I play games online I don't have a problem

Just in case here is what I got when I put ipconfig /all in cmd.

C:\Windows\system32>ipconfig /all

I'm not sure. Honestly I don't even know if I had a virus. I just kept getting BSoD, so I assumed I had a virus and reformatted my computer while I could back up my files.

Ok, what browser are you using when you get these errors? This seems to be a fairly common experience while using Chrome. Check the DNS settings in Chrome if that's what you're using; but try and open the same page in another browser to confirm that it's just the browser. You'll want to change the DNS server addresses to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, as they are Google's DNS servers.

If this leads to no avail, do this :

Open Network & Sharing Center: Click on the icon of your internet connection on your task bar. At the bottom should be the words "Open Network And Sharing Center"; click on them.

Click on "Change Adapter Settings" on the left-hand list of topics.
This will direct you to a page where you will see your LAN (wired) connection and your wireless connections.

Right click on the network connection you are using.

Scroll down to and click on "Properties". If prompted for an administrator password, provide one.

A new window will pop up. Double-click on "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)"

Another new window pops up. Look at the lower grouping of greyed-out boxes. Select the radio button for "Use the following DNS server addresses:".
Type 8.8.8.8 into the preferred DNS server slot. You have to hit the right arrow key after each 8 or you will end up with an improperly formatted server.
Type 8.8.4.4 into the alternate server. Again you need to hit the right arrow key after each number.

Select the "Validate settings on exit" checkbox, then click "OK".

Click "OK" on the properties window.

The Window Network Diagnostic will now run. If it cannot find an error, then you have properly reset your DNS server.

What kind of DNS errors?

"The server at Google can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed"

Thats what it says on Google Chrome.

One solution posted was this: I did the following; Go to Control Panel, Admin tools, Services, right click on DNS Client and reset. Same for DHCP Client service. Then to CMD window and enter IPCONFIG/FLUSHDNS.

This would also accomplish the same thing; but more generally, and without knowing specifically what changed. Good call though, much simpler than my verbose hullabaloo.

I have already tried doing the two things you said but neither work. Its not a browser problem, I get it when I use other ones (Firefox, IE) as well. The weird thing is that Windows says I'm connected and theres absolutely no problems with my connection; before I reformatted my computer it worked fine too. Im probably going to reformat (again :() if this cant be fixed.

Sorry it took me so long to reply, I completely forgot about this! Thanks for helping Poimethus and chev.
