I usually allocate 20GB. But since it is dynamically allocated (at least that is your choice), it does not really matter. It uses only as much as needed.

The files always start out small and grow to a max of whatever you set. So, I usually set it to something like 60-80GB to ensure that I have enough space. It's rare they ever go over 5GB.

Virtual Box works perfectly well if you give it 1GB of RAM - especially with Linux as a guest. I have done that on a system with a total of 3GB of RAM and am very happy with the performance of the Windows7 host and the Ubuntu guest.

Well, I Have Windows 7 as the guest, and I find myself having to close out apps just to free up that much. But I manage.
