Somewhere in this forum I think I read that Brink (or someone) had uninstalled Java, for security reasons.

Is uninstalling Java feasible. ?
I presently have Java disabled (in my browser -- Palemoon) and only activate it as necessary

Thank you :)

Java is not a part of Windows but is a separate product. Many people, including myself, do not have it installed. Java is a well known security risk. It is usually not required but there are a number of websites that require it.

@ LMiller7 :)

For memory most banks use Java for internet banking (dumb).

I will leave Java disabled and only enable it if I have too.
Or is just the presence of Java a problem?

Thanks for your very prompt reply :)

Apparently Java is often used by banks on the server. It is not usually required on the client but there are a exceptions.

If you need Java then it must be installed. Otherwise it is just a security risk and best uninstalled. At one time I had Java installed, but no more. I don't miss it.

Just checked my Browsers (Palemoon and Firefox) ... no sign of Java enabled or disabled.
- Java is out of "Oracle" isn't it ?
- 10 days ago I received a Oracle Hoax (had a run of email hoaxes in about a week)
- now I am wondering if there is a connection between the Oracle hoax and the state of my installed programs.

In "Add remove Programs" I do have "Java 7 Update 45" ... October 2013 ... 118 MB
If I uninstall it that should be the end of Java ?
- what is the chance of a hidden Java ?
- I have run Bitdefender, SUPERantiVirus, and Malwarebytes ... and all is clean (I hope)

EDIT
-----
:tip: Just occurred to me ...
- I have done an "Everything" search of my laptop HDD for: java
- revealed 84 items
- have exported the "search" and imported into a spreadsheet.
- a lot of folders
- I will go through the list and evaluate each entry

I will return here with results

Thank you all for your help so far

Please don't mix Java and Javascript.
Javascript is used in Browsers like Chrome, Firefox etc. and has nothing in common with Java from Oracle despite the name.
You can uninstall Java but beware that some programs need the java runtime.

Examples are: Eclipse, Minecraft, Jdownloader and some functions of Open-/LibreOffice.

If Java RE is really needed two suggestions:

Install it together with your OS in VirtualBox.

or

By using the portable JRE from PortableApps.com you can start Java based programs just in case you need them.
Sample for JDownloader shortcut on my desktop:
"c:\utilities\commonfiles\java\bin\javaw.exe" -jar "c:\jdownloader\app\jdownloader\jdownloader.jar"

Target of jportablexxx.online.paf.exe is directory
c:\utilities\commonfiles\java (also for future JRE updates) xxx = java release

Somewhere in this forum I think I read that Brink (or someone) had uninstalled Java, for security reasons.

I read that, too.

It was a thread about tuning and configuring your Windows 7 after a clean install, IIRC.

Could anyone point me to that thread, please?

Update: found the thread here (see step 7).

That is a very interesting thread about configuring Windows 7. A must read.

I have seen that thread and the comment about Java. I would also suggest not installing Flash add-on for IE or other browsers. It too is a common infection vector. Install Chrome and only use it when you must see Flash content.

Install it when needed. Some apps or sites require Java being pre-installed.
