Do I need these programs?

Doing some house cleaning. Before I delete some of these programs, which ones do I really need?

Bonjour. I have iTunes, but no Mac. Don't think I knowingly ever used this program.

Which of these MS Redistributables do I need?

If you have Microsoft Office, you can uninstall Microsoft Works. Leave the rest of them. Some of the software may need them.

If you don't use iTunes you can unload Bonjour as well although I do believe it may also be used by Adobe Photoshop CS3.

I do agree with uninstalling Microsoft Works if you have Microsoft Office as well.

Works is mainly for the home user who doesn't want the cost of MS Office or all the bells and whistles that come with it.

I have MS Office 2000 Small Business v. 9.00.2720 and MS Works 9.0. I use mostly Word and PowerPoint. Do I loose anything by deleting MS Works?

I think Works has a spreadsheet application. I don't know if your version of Office has Excel?? Spreadsheets are very very handy and I would not give up Works unless Office had Excel. Other than that, I doubt if Works has anything you need.

Well Works has a bunch of stuff in it. Maybe there IS something you need. You'll have to take a look at it and decide for yourself.

But definately do not uninstall any of the VS redistributables. They are shared libraries used by a lot of programs. Removing one would be a real shotgun like effect on what programs decide to stop working THey are all tiny anyway.

Bonjour is a print server. I need it because my network printer is plugged into an Apple Airport Extreme base station. I think that unless you have a similar setup, you don't need it.

What probably happened is when you installed software from Apple (iTunes, QuickTime) it also installed an "auto check for updates from Apple" program. So, when you have an iTunes update, it wants to update any other Apple software you may have...or install Apple software you may not have like Bonjour, MobileMe, Safari, etc. You have to uncheck the software you don't want to install.

On a side note, every time you update iTunes you need to go into mscofig and de-select it from start up. QuickTime as well. Just FYI.

As I explained, Works is mainly for the home user and has a basic Word Processer, Spreadsheet and Database.

Your version of Office has Excel, which can be used as a spreadsheet and a database so the choice is yours.

That said, if you have schoolchildren at home, Microsoft Works could come in handy for any school homework projects.
