Hello,

I have a kinda outdated AMD Radeon HD 5450 card - which is still fine for my purposes - installed in my system which is run by a freshly installed Windows 7 x64 Professional. I'm using the latest catalyst driver v15.7.1. Do I need to install this update from the Windows update?

I personally do not install driver updates from Windows Update. I only get them from the computer or hardware manufacturer. That being said, if your system is functioning correctly, I would not install any hardware update. Many times the update is just to accommodate new hardware.

When I was trying Windows 10 weeks ago, I installed the graphics driver using the official catalyst driver software & rebooted but, to my surprise, Windows wasn't showing me the correct resolution and it seems like I didn't install anything at all! and I had to wait for Windows update to push to me its own software driver and it worked and I was given the correct native resolution of my monitor so I feel like there's an extra components in Microsoft's software that is missing in the driver made by AMD itself (aka catalyst drivers) but i have no evidence of what I'm saying.
Since I have some issues with google chrome (some black parts appear suddenly which I suspect to be a driver issue), I thought of asking first before installing any updates that may be useless/redundant

If windows is trying to give you another amd driver, then you must not be using the latest. You can either download the latest from amd or keep what you have, the decision is yours, but it`s usually best to get the latest. But not always necessary.

The one I'm using is v15.7.1 which is the latest, supposedly!

Yep not always the case with M$ offering the most recent
Since M$ does not list which driver it is or at least I've never been able to identify it I leave it to collect dust and update myself through NVidia
Even then I stay a month behind so I skip early bugs :)
