Do i need to Format

I am going to replace a broken (beyond repair) installation of windows 7 I am using the partition the broken windows 7 is already on. Do i need to format the partition before i do the installation or will the new version of windows just overwrite the old version.

If u have some data that u need on C: drive then donot format . It will overwrite ( some chances of conflicts)
However clean installation is always better then overwrite (zero chances of conflicts )

The best way to delete an old OS is always to delete its partition during reinstall, using the Drive Options pictured in Steps 7 and 8 of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html.

Unless you have a reason not to, I would delete all partitions and then create and format new as you wish using those same Drive Options.
