Pretty damn amazed this even happened, I selected Defrag partition, it stated that it needed to restart to complete, since I was doing things I clicked cancel hoping to finish it later. The second I clicked cancel 100 error messages came up, the Paragon software showed 2 giant partitions and then the HDD spun down.

I'm now running Vista SP1 and intend to stay here. Farewell 7.

Are you using paragon defrag? I advise you uninstall ASAP incase you make a misclick rofl. 20 pixels away is DOOM. :shock:

Why would you forsake Windows 7 just because of 1 piece of software? Personally i've only ever used Windows native defrag & it works fine. Not all defrag software is compatible with Windows 7, and I wouldn't trust anything other than antivirus software 100%

I use software at my own risk, if I have to re-install because of a piece of software then I don't use that software again & look for an alternative.

Don't fault Win7, I've never installed a Paragon product since it hosed a RAID I had running XP Pro. It's another piece of doomware I added to my list.

I am pretty impressed by the resident defrag function in w7. It works much, much faster than Rasco's Perfect Disk, which is what I used to use on Vista. And you can schedule the W7 defrag just about anyway you want. It's all I need for defrag.

Now W7 back & restore functions are another matter alltogether. I found it impossible, after booting up into repair mode from the installation disk, to access an image I had created on an external USB drive using the W7 native backup function. Here Acronis TIH 2009 still rules and fortunately seems to be working flawless on my W7 installation.

It moves files to the outside of the disk for faster reading which is good when you're using a 5400rpm notebook drive. Unfortunately AFAIK the windows software doesn't.

Yeah, that's what I thought too and that and the speed of it was why I was impressed.

This article on Windows 7 Defragmenting doesn't really answer the question about moving boot files per-se but it does speak of moving NTFS metadata files (as well as lots of other improvements).

You are correct, this is why it takes longer than a 3rd party defragger. As for Paragon Hard Disk Manager. I have purchased their software for five years. It is very diversified and can perform complex HDD tasks. However, it's not for a novice user.

If you want a fast defragger rather than the one that comes with W7, I recommend Smart Defrag at www.piriform.com .

Smart Defrag and Auslogic Defrag run a close race. They are the two leading free defraggers on the Internet. I have used them both on all Windows OSes.

You'll be happy with either one. Auslogic can defrag a seperate folder, Smart Defrag will defrag while the system is idle. I have tested both on XP, Vista and 7 32 and 64 bit (all systems).

I've used AusLogics and it seems to work just fine. I'm not a big proponent of defragging. I think it amounts to little performance benefit, but wear and tear on the drive mainly.
