Do these software programs work with Win 7 Pro/Ultimate

I am planning to get a new pc (sorry Mac). I would like to get a system with Win7 Pro or Ultimate. But, I have a library that I choose not to upgrade.

The titles I heavily use: Quark Express 5. Photoshop 5.5. Acrobat 5.

Will there be issues with any of these titles?

If there are...I will go with WinXP pro. (Sorry, Mac).

Photoshop 5.5 will not work in Win 7 64 bit because it has a 16 bit installer program and 16 bit progs won't run on a 64 bit machine. It will work on 32 bit.

If Quark and Acrobat 5 are old, they may have 16 bit installers also?? In which case you would be out of luck.

All those programs should have new updated versions that are fully 7 compatible.

Although there is the XP mode in win 7 if I recall correctly. I don't know if ti would still work for 16bit installers though since the 7 itself is in 64.

Quark 4 on Windows

I have not tried QXP 5 on newer Windows but I can relate this:

When I got a laptop w/ XP I had no floppy and could not install my V4 so I copied the installed directory from 98 to regular XP. It worked fine after I dragged a shortcut onto the desktop. I did the same with Vista and it easily outperformed better than the crippleware Vista. I just got a new desktop machine w/ 8 gig RAM and terrabytes of storage. I copied Quark again from an external USB onto my Windows 7 Home and again it works fine and I have already produced ,PDFs for Acrobat 10 from my QXP 4. The only problem so far is the fact it was NOT installed on the Windows 7 and I have yet to create an association in 7. Yes, MS buggered associations that worked in XP and even Vista which was a disaster anyway.

If Quark 4 doesn't work on normal XP, Vista and Windows 7, then why is it working as a portable application for me? I already swallowed the Quark learning curve for my production of 300, 600, 1200 and 2400 resolution PDFs. Be very careful of what the experts KNOW until you've found out otherwise. The net would slim way down if untruths were removed. Note, a friend found multiple .DLLs inside Windows Home that service 64, 32 and 16 bit applications. I suspect QXP 4 is not using anything outside its own installed directory.

Get Win7 Pro or Ultimate and run older programs in XP mode (download 'Virtual PC' and 'XP Mode' from Microsoft website, it's free and installs on Pro or Ultimate or Enterprise versions).
I've setup several machines with Win7 Pro and Ultimate 64 bit. Installed old Canon scanners (that ran on XP but not on Win7 64 bit), installed old dBase V 16 bit program (again, will not run on Win7), installed Acrobat 5, Photoshop 7, etc. Just make sure that you have a minimum of 2GB memory.

Research your Win7 hardware requirement for Virtual PC and XP Mode on the MS website.

The Acrobat will not work and I have seen chatter about Acrobat 7, 8 , 9 not being worth the $ but I can say that Acrobat 10 X has been redesigned for 64 and while the interface appears to be "in search," I think that you can get comfortable enough to really look down on previous versions. Read my earlier reply about Quark 4.# before you determine to run in emulation in Ultimate. I am using QXP 4.# on Windows 7 Home 64. I still think the PS 4, I ran on a SCSI machine was about as fast as I am editing now on 4 cores and 8 threads. I might point out that if you are eshooting with a digital camera, mine's God, but pricey, step up to a newer PS that is 64 bit (Adobe has a free .PDF release on maxing setup for CS5) and please shoot in RAW for God's sake. You'd NEVER go back. I wrote a couple free, illustrated tutorials on a RAW trick that you may want to employ to use the massive density ranges of RAWs. There are currently two: RAW layers @ RAW Layers - a set on Flickr and RAW layers in CS @ RAW layers in CS - a set on Flickr. Steal them fair and square. You can do the same with Lightroom and possibly the free Irfanview. You may want the same control. Other advantages of newer PSes are imports for newer digital camera RAWs as well as using color printing profiles to prebalance your images for Costco's 12X18s @ 2.99 and cheap poster sized prints from their big Epson inkjets. Forget pricey printers. Dry Creek Photo (Google) calibrates their printers twice a year and publishes all the profiles free on the web according to Costco destination. Believe me, you could not afford the quality or ink at their prices. If you don't step up to a PS that can open your RAWs, you will have to step up to a newer Lightroom version or become familiar with Adobe's free DNG converter for your RAWs. (Search for a RAW importer that came with your camera. All are another step. If the Quark trick works, save that money for a new Adobe PS. Make up your mind and study my free tutorials I created on my D70. I am using a D700 with pricey but stunning full-frame lenses now, the more expensive one does not even flare if pointed at the the sun. I used to think the old Nikon lenses were special but seldom crank them onto the same old 1950s reflex bayonet. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 without the squirrelly MS emulations. Save more money. Windows 7 is heads above their crippleware Vista. You may even find my Flickr mail over on my site. Perhaps more than you wanted but you are poised at a gateway now.
