Do You Recommend it?

Hey guys, i got a tall order for you guys.

i was wondering if it would be advisable to have 2 AV's, 2 Anti Spyware/Malware, and 2 Fire walls? Recently i had a glitch in the system, some Backdoor virus is trying to get in.
Bitdefender is blocking it left and right so im safe. Am i over reacting? or should i amp up my security? So i considered running 2 of each.

heres what i considered

Main AV: Bitdefender 2nd AV: Either MSE, Avast or Avira

Main Anti spyware/malware: MalwareBytes 2nd Anti: Superantispyware or any other

Main Firewall: windows7 firewall control 2nd wall: pctools firewall or anyother

what do you guys think? i mostly use my puter for school, games, and im constantly downloading new software.

While running 2 AV's is possible, it's definitely not advisable. There's nothing at all wrong with running a virus scan with more than one anti-virus program. Because it's just a scan - it starts, it scans, and then it's done. Real time monitoring, which is installed with most anti-virus programs is constantly running and scanning files downloaded to your machine. Running two or more real time anti-virus monitors at the same time is very likely to cause a conflict which could result in any number of error messages or failures. The most advisable thing to do would to be to find a good, reliable anti-virus program that you trust, and make sure it's always updated with the latest definitions.

Same for anti-spyware programs, as long as there isn't two real time monitoring engines trying to do the same thing at once, you should be fine.

The same goes for firewalls, however, I just wouldn't recommend running two software based firewalls at the same time because, as with AV programs, they monitor in real time, and two programs trying to do the same thing at once can and usually will cause problems. However, if you have a hardware based firewall, such as one built into a router, there would be no problem running a software and a hardware based firewall.

As for your case, if you believe BitDefender is doing it's job, I would leave it as your anti-virus, and use MalwareBytes and run a periodic scan to check for spyware, and either use the default Windows Firewall, or another 3rd party firewall and all should be fine. But remember, the best security is purely common sense while browsing

My gosh! Why don't you just shutdown your computer off ifyou are that scared.
I'm not going to lecture you on the sites you visit.

This is what I suggest and not two of each.

One firewall running.
One Antivirus running.
Malwarebytes scan every few days.
And the final part is you need to take personal precaustions on where and what you seek on the internet. This will save your hide many times over.

I use MS Security Essentials, Win7 Firewall and scan with Malewarebytes.
That's all I have.

technically possible yes...advisable NO
AV:
you can use mse with BD or even avira just disable the real time protection in one of them..set exclusions for each other ....
Anti Spyware:
you can run mbam pro in real time..ideally you should....have SAS/hitman as secondary scanners
Firewall:
always run just One
win 7 FW is good especially if you are behind a router....PCtools is great too esp with its spi filtering and granular contol

ideally....
stick to BD add mbam pro...disable win defender real time protection add hitman as secondary scanner....and have an image backed up

well if you run two of each you'll surely give malware a hard time running for it would not find any space to run ....cpu/ram clogged by your security apparatus...no point making pc unusable by piling on av's ....leave the paranoia

We are not mind readers and in many cases we have to guess.
If you gave us a little more details why you became so paranoid we canhelp calm you down a little.

Wow... really? Something tried to GET IT :shock:???

If you're connected to the internet through broadband connection (DSL/Cable/FIOS), I suggest you use a hardware router, a real router... Assuming "something" wants to "get in", a hardware router/firewall is still the best "gatekeeper" to keep those kind of things out, that is if there's ANYTHING out there wants to get in to begin with...

And forget about running two of everything (AV/FW/whatever), it'll drain performance, will create a lot of problems, will cause you your sanity... You'd be better off using 1 firewall, 1 AV, 1 malware scanner, and the most important - your common sense... All anti virus in the world can't protect you if you don't use your common sense, it might help to some degree, but... you know...

As has already been typed, it's not recommended. There are other programs, however, you can add to your defence. I recommend looking into Sandboxie.

Ok, so you recently got hit with a rogue. Presumably, your computer is clean now and I expect that part of the learning you're after came through the cleanup process.

I won't go into the A/V, A-S, firewall part as you have already heard from the others on that aspect. What I will say is to use the product you are comfortable with. You'll probably find as many recommendations here as there are products on the market.

Aside from safe surfing, Microsoft security updates and the already discussed antivirus, anti-malware and firewall, there are other software programs that need updating to safeguard your computer, such as Adobe products, Java, alternate browser(s). To check if your system is missing security updates or has insecure applications installed, visit OSI - Consumer - Products or download PSI - Consumer - Products. The online version of Secunia Software Inspector runs through your browser with no installation or download required and does the following:

• Detects insecure versions of applications installed
• Verifies that all Microsoft patches are applied
• Assists you in updating your system and applications

I suggest that you install and keep updated SpywareBlaster to prevent the installation of spyware and other potentially unwanted software: SpywareBlaster | Prevent spyware and malware. Free download.
