I'm curious as to why two people voted 'no'.

I only voted no for one reason, and really, its not Win7's fault, but ATI. I have a ASUS W90VP with dual 4870's in crossfire and there are no video drivers that work for my setup, YET.

So, I guess its a conditional not yet.

I didn't vote because neither choice works for me.

As far as XP goes, no question, absolutely better. It is more secure, makes better use of modern hardware, and I think the GUI is vastly improved.

As far as Vista goes, meh. I believe 7 is an incremental improvement over Vista, but certainly not vastly better. On modern hardware, 7 is no faster than Vista SP2, and benchmark after benchmark shows this. What 7 does do better is run on lesser hardware, making it viable for netbooks.

I have 4 computers at home and I will only be upgrading one of them to 7. The others will remain Vista for the time being. I can't justify the cost to upgrade all of them, 7 just doesn't offer that much more.

Yes, but they are available as free downloads. I actually like this better, as this allows these components to be updated on a different schedule than the OS via SPs.

You two agree on something?! I have got to post a crosslink to the "Is IE Dead?" thread.... :D

Here is a kicker, I agree with both of you as well. The "add-ons' mentioned contributed to the "bloatware" accusations regarding non-essential software bundled with the OS (unlike IE, hehe...). So now people can elect to use the MS add-ons or not.

So yes, they were removed but they are available. Also I like the direction Windows Live is taking. It really is a move toward "cloud computing" in many ways. Live Mail is superior to both the old Hotmail and the Windows Mail, IMO. Photo Gallery and Move Maker, well, I think there are better 3rd party tools but, as pointed out, they can now be promoted and developed as independent entities.

Drivers always lag the betas and RCs. As long as the manufacturers hit the RTM date all will be well in the mass market release. Welcome to the bleeding edge of technology. In the last month or so, on my W7 7232 system alone, I have installed brand spanking new W7 compatible drivers from Realtek, ATI and Logitech before their hardware would work.

Actually, I respect pertrossa's point of view almost always. He obviously has been involved in the software world in his past and has dealt with things from a different standpoint than I. He has a Euro-centric body of experience and mine is US-centric, but I think we both feel the same regarding competition and monopolies.

We obviously disagree on a number of points regarding MS's role in things, but I think he makes very good points and causes me to at least pause and do some research.

I like to debate. It's fun to have an adversary who knows as much, if not more than I.:p

I use XP Pro at work all day doing 3D modeling and it works ok on the Dual XEON quad core...could be better.

My lappy has Vista Home and Vista Business and runs better than any PC I have ever had, even the work PC. My Win7 decided to take a crap.

I like 7 to a point but it is a matter of opinion. Win7 is pretty much "Vista Lite" in my opinion to me. I have gotten used to Vista over time. And using 7 takes a little getting used to.

So I would have to say Vista is #1 and XP and 7 are a close tie given that they run almost the same for me but not in comparison to the Vista.

FYI...I know that this is a Win7 forum, but I still like Vista more...for now...:D

I use XP and Ubuntu as my primary OS but still mess around with W7 when possible.

As a long time computer tech, from the time I uses Vista beta until even normal usage, I still completely hate Vista, it is a useless pile of junk on at least 75% of computers, including many high end systems. I have had nothing but problems on my personal machines as well as a majority of computers that I work on and deal with on a daily basis.... yet these same machines have zero problems with anywhere from a fresh to 4 year old installs of XP. I got a new laptop a few months back (Celeron 585 2.16GHz, 2 or 3GB RAM, 250GB SATA HD, Intel 4500M 64-128MB video) and it included Vista Home Premium... The Vista installed on this laptop ran slower than the 7 year old laptop (CeleronM, 768MB RAM, 80GB IDE HD, ATI outdated 8MB video RAM) with XP that I just sold a few weeks prior.

So I formatted the hard drive, dual booting it with W7 and Ubuntu and it is just amazing how much faster and smoother W7 is on this laptop than Vista is or was on any other system. I even have 4 OS setup on my main desktop (see specs below, this is the E6600 machine) and direct comparison between Vista and W7 is just amazing. Vista is not usable for at least 3-4 minutes after starting, yet W7 is usable within 30 seconds. I even used a utility to find out the boot times and when the memory and CPU usage was low enough for safe usage which verified these numbers.

Based on my usage and my opinion, I would say the main OS I run would be in this order:

1st place XP
2nd place W7 beta
3rd Ubuntu 9.04
10th Vista (4th through 9th go to Win 2000, Win98SE, Win98, Win95 and so on)
11th WinME

I would say if they fix the driver issues with ATI cards and a few other small issues then W7 can easily overtake 1st after it is released.

I know I have one copy already pre-ordered (Home Premium) and may decide to get a second if the money comes available soon.

I had a 19" Sony Trinitron for 7-8 years until it finally bit the dust just before XMAS. They were not inexpensive in 2001 (2?) but I never regretted the purchase. The best CRT I ever had.

I believe I ran it at 75Hz in Vista and XP with both Nvidia and ATI drivers /cards.

Yeah, this beast is ~6-8 years old and I also remember it not being cheap. Although it is a pain to lift, it's been easy on my eyes. and taken a lot of abuse. So whenever it dies, I will give it a proud viking funeral.

I wish 75 worked for me. That's the only setting 7 spits back at me (with or without nividia drivers). 75 gives it the shakes, but 60 seems to keep it off the Michael J Fox impressions.

Whatevs at this point. I'll try magic RTM that'll come out around the 13th and hope it works.

My first post since registering a few minutes ago.

Upgraded my "rig" (as previously described) yesterday and mostly because I really want to get into this OS with all the right gear. I have been running Windows 7 dual boot with XP Pro since January and mostly logging into Windows 7 install since about March as I prefer it and it just works.

Right from the beta install this one got me in and I have yet to see anything not dramatically better than XP and let's face it Vista was no contest!

In short I love it!! Before I saw this I was seriously considering going to a Mac (still might with Windows 7 in VM) but my PC has a new life now with this new OS. I'm a computer tech for a living so I guess I'll get a fair crack at finding out what the "hidden" problems are shortly after its official release.

I really don't see why people totally hate Vista and totally love 7 at the same time. Both OS are pretty, if not very, similar. I have seen much more differences between XP and Vista than between Vista and 7. They simply tweaked out Vista. Personally I think Vista is now a great OS, especially with SP2. Putting Vista side by side with ME is a non total sense in my opinion, as it is to put 7 and Vista on the two extremity of a scale.

Microsoft have totally failed with the image of Vista and several people have kept to this image over time. It's the complete opposite with 7.

I can't answer your poll definitively.

Better than XP, yes. However, so was Vista.

Better than Vista, no. So far using Win7 hasn't improved my computing experience as much as using Vista did after XP. Not saying I'm unimpressed, just not moved.
