Do you trust game reviews / worst game installed but got good review

Do you listen and trust game reviews or judge them for your self. Would you still buy a game if it only got fair review but the price was cheap enough.

What game did you install and was deeply disappointed even when the game got a good review

I have come to learn NOT to trust any Magazine or Online Reviews, no matter how good or bad they seem to be, bias or un-bias... they all are looking to make money from ads.

So, being said that, I usually read reviews by fellow members here and other forums I frequent and read what they have to say, take some reviews with a grain of salt if the member says "The game sucks, trust me" as this only tells me it is a very uninformed opinion of the game.

Opinions are like butts, we all have one but for the most part, since I always buy a game from the bargain bin, I don't feel that bad when the game sucked and I had high hopes for it... more so now being that most of them are console ports (and some really bad ports) I don't touch the retail prices.

I lend far more wieght to fellow gamers. Especially those who like/dislike similar games as I do, as thier opinion will be closer to what I would think.

I agree. All "Pro" reviews are just in it for the Ad money for the most part. Bad review means the Ad may get pulled and they loose money. So its in thier best interest to give a good score.

The most recent for me was MAss Effect 3. Take a look at the disconnect there.
Many big sites such as IGN said 9.5/10 "Amazing" --- "Perfect Conclusion" etc with very high scores.
Fellow gamers review? A 2/10 or 4/10 and ... "WTF just happened here? What game did they play or did they even play it?"

And theres many others that come out quite similar. Meanwhile, some truly good games get bashed by critics, while gamers love them.

I agree with Wishmaster I remember when Left4dead then Left4dead 2 came out it was being bashed here and there but gamers really love it

Also it is one of valves biggest tittles now and some games are trying to patern the style that the game started meaning it wasnt that bad at all but the reviews didn't make it seem worth getting

Most of the time i would do what you think is best I have gotten many games with crap reviews that were actually a good play so ,Ask people you know instead of trusting a world wide review cause most likly they just did a demo and 5 mins of play time

For the most part, I haven't really had any review sites (like Gamespot.com) let me down all that much. I mostly only use gamespot for reviews. The only game that I can think of at the moment that had positive reviews, but the game was pretty lame ass was Doom 3. I even wrote my own very negative review for Doom 3 (also very condescending, too). I was the only person to give the game a lower score than a C. I normally don't really write reviews for games, but Doom 3 was such a P.O.S game that I just had to write a review for it.

So far, in my opinion, gamespot has given some pretty accurate reviews so far from what I've seen. Usually if I decide I want to buy a game, I always go check out the reviews at gamespot.com.

Edit: There have been some games with low scores there that looked/sounded like they deserved them. If a game gets a low score, I usually just skip that game.

fellow games have nothing to gain but respect from rave reviews. i trust them better than the mags. same with those so-called movie critics.

The people at a website I frequently visit (half of them anyway) said they liked it, and the other half didn't like it. So if you don't like it, I think you could return it to the company instead of the store (though I'm unsure about that part). I just know I won't be buying it. ME2 was fun for me, but it wasn't really worth playing through it a second time. It just got boring because those pissants didn't let you mod it.

One thing I don't understand is... why do people go to read reviews after they have purchased the game but didn't like it?

Or buy the game, don't like it, read the reviews and now they get all bent out of shape with the Developer... WTH??? :huh:

Do reading the reviews afterwards will change your mind and all of a sudden now you like it?

Personally, I don't take that much notice of reviews. They are just the opinion of the individual reviewer of a product at the time they reviewed it. As such, they are subjective. Of course, you might agree with their views, but there will be times where your own opinion is the complete opposite of the reviewer.

True. Though there are a few people who give really good/insightful reviews, and those are the ones I generally look for.

"Official" reviews are still just 1 review each; I only read them because they tend to be written with actual grammar and spelling right. I "trust" them about as much as I trust any other review.

I read the really bad user reviews to find out the main weaknesses, bugs etc of the game.

I read the really good user reviews to find out the good points of the game.

Between these good and bad points, I have a sketchy mental picture of the game; so now I go read the sane user reviews, and see how everything matches up.

Then I look up gameplay videos to see the game in actual play.

Last of all I go into the forums and see what people are actually talking about. You can have a great game with overall good reviews, but only find out in the forums that the save game mechanism is bugged and craps out 50% of the time. Or somebody might recommend a similar game that you like better due to feature X instead of feature Y in this game.

So yeah, you need to read beyond just "official" reviews.

To answer the OP's question: no, I have never been disappointed by reading a good review, then buying a game I didn't enjoy. Have been gaming for 2 decades+ now.

Therein lies the problem... sometimes.

If you go to watch the trailer or teaser (before the game is out and or you are thinking on preorder or either buying the game), there is no actual gameplay but mainly cut scenes.

Only after the game is out and a few people have pre-order it (thank god for them though ) is that you can see actual game play.

I don't put hardly any faith whatsoever in a game review. I often look at the review to just get an idea of how the game plays, or features that have been included or removed, but that is about it for me.

Games are so subjective. Lots of people that I work with are fans of World of Warcraft and StarCraft and absolutely love them. For me, I tried them and they are not my kind of game. This doesn't mean they are bad for their genre, but I don't care for the type of gameplay they provide. They just don't apppeal to me at all. I tend to like FPS games and racing games. Things that I can fire up, play for 10-15 minutes and then go onto something else.

So, yeah, I will buy a game which gets a bad review, and I will skip a game that gets a great review.

Well Max Payne is Based on a Graphic novel so........ Expect the voice over and cut scene's to be frequent as in the previous Max Payne 1 & 2

Another thing that I really go for is what they think is a downside or a "con" to the game. Such as if a person says "it has shitty controls" or if they can't change the keymapping like they did for Dungeon Siege 3 (which I sent back, the game's a P.O.S). It's little failures like that that keep me away from some games. Like Assassin's Creed 1. I didn't really care for the controls in the game, and I stopped playing it within the first hour or so.

Normally if I don't like a game within even the first 30 minutes sometimes, I just won't play it anymore, or I'll just give the game to someone else. Such as Dungeon Siege 3. I played it for maybe 30 minutes, and I didn't like it at all. It did NOT feel like Dungeon Siege 1 or 2 at all, so I quit playing it. Doom 3 was the same way for me. They just screwed it up big time.

Edit: I've been playing the crap out of GTA4 recently. I've been having a blast with it. It's just frickin' awesome. It's just one of those games I'll be playing a lot like I did with GTA3. (I didn't really like San Andreas mainly because the whole "living as a gangster" is total BS to me. I honestly thought it was boring as hell and most of the "skills" you learned were just totally effing pointless). Vice City was alright, but I more than likely won't play it again. I beat it once, and I don't really have any inclination to play it again.

I'll read some reviews just to get an idea of what the games about.
But as others have said, games are pretty subjective.
Youtube vids have saved me a lot of money.
I can pretty well tell from watching a couple walkthrough vids if the game suits me.
I've watched 2 complete walkthroughs of games I never even wanted to buy.
Alan Wake, and Metro-something or other. Both linear, which i just don't care for.
Some others I buy after seeing just a couple short playthrough vids.

Given the industry's track record of launch day bugs and nearly universal failure for titles to live up to the hype, "preordering" is generally a very unwise gamble.

No probs, I liked Max Payne 2 better for action because at least after the movie scenes (most) you got to play more actual game, just that I noticed most of the cut scenes used in MP3 you got to actually play them instead in MP2 of just watching them.
