Do you unplug your router when your away on vacation?

Yes, just in case there was a bad electrical storm while I was away. It's probably not necessary, but better safe than sorry.

I generally don't; but I think I will start. When I got home after two weeks, my router was fried. Remember to unplug it from the telephone line or cable also.

Unplug modem to? BTW you should get a surge protector.

I do have a surge protector. It will not protect against lightning strikes.

I unplug mine whenever I'm not using it, whether I'm away or not.

I don't see the point of leaving it plugged-in personally.

Greg, If my neighbours can get into my router they're welcome to leech my broadband.

But it's not that easy, and I think most of them have trouble selecting a decent TV channel :devil:

I put a password on my friend's router. Next morning an old lady knocked on the door asking that we turn her internet back on. I helped negotiate a nice monthly usage fee within her budget and gave her the password. I've wondered since then what else she might be pirating.

Hi there
since I don't have any private stuff on my server I'm quite happy for anybody to leech the broadband while I am away from home --They'll need the password of course.

However where my server is based its inconceviable that people don't have broadband already -- the only people who might even consider it would be tourists etc but there's plenty of wifi etc all over the country.

If you don't need access to a remote computer you might as well turn it off but modern routers don't consume much power especially when there isn't any Internet activity going on.
