If you're going to unplug the router you might as well unplug the modem too.

We don't have severe electrical storms where I live and I don't worry about someone leeching my connection so I personally don't unplug stuff when I leave.

I put a password on my friend's router. Next morning an old lady knocked on the door asking that we turn her internet back on. I helped negotiate a nice monthly usage fee within her budget and gave her the password. I've wondered since then what else she might be pirating.
