Solved Docs on a SSD

I had my Docs on a spinner and have plenty of room on my SSD so this afternoon I put the Docs on the SSD. The pictures and songs open very fast, but the MS Word docs open about at about the same speed as before, four or five seconds. I was just curious if anyone had any "scientific knowledge" as to why this might be? Thanks,

They have to be processed. Getting them into memory that is easy. Processing them, not so easy.

Maybe the delay is more from the program you use to open them rather than the IO for getting the files into memory, which is what a SSD greatly improves. The processing Logicearth mentions that comes from there on is mostly CPU time, with maybe some more IO to load the program itself.
But since the docs are, typically, small files, I would not expect a great difference.

Did you relocate the Docs folder back to the SSD? They should open as fast as or faster than music, less data.

Yes I took the spinner out of the PC and put all docs on the SSD. Like you say, they should open fast. When I open MS Word program, it is a one second opening, but opening the docs are three to four seconds.
The docs were the main reason I moved all of the files to the SSD.

I just tried it. I have everything on my 128GB SSD.

Clicking on a word document opens in 1 second from Windows Explorer, a slight but noticible delay.
Clicking on a document from the list of previously opened ones, or from File / Open is almost instantaneous.

OK, thanks. I will have to do some research then to find out why I am getting a three second response from Library.

Try clearing your MRU list in Word. It probably has to resolve the new location for each file you open.

I tried the test too. Clicking a Word docx file it opens in about a second or so. With Word open then Open file it is nearly instant.
Word takes some time to open I suspect that's what adds to the time with opening a docx file directly? BTW, my Documents are on a spinner while Office is on a SSD.

Well guys, I don't know. I appreciate all the hints, but so far nothing seems to make a difference. I guess that is just the way it is. I have gotten so used to the SSD that anytime I have to wait for a few seconds, it seems like an eternity. Thanks,

LOL, a SSD will spoil one real fast. As an example, PS or Paint.NET on a HDD took several seconds to open, SSD time I guess is about ½ second, fast at least.
Correction PS takes about 1-2 seconds, but still much faster than on a HDD.

Jim, do you have Word on the SSD?

I've tried it both ways and there is only a slight difference. Without word open, the file opens in 1 second or less. I have Office installed on 1 SSD and the libraries on another SSD, if that makes a difference.

Yes, Word is on my C: partition and D: partition has my Docs but both are on the same SSD.

I just found a webpage discussing this. One suggestion was to go into MSCONFIG and disable the Microsoft Services. I did this and it is a lot better. There is only a very small delay now, which is not bad. Not sure what that accomplished but it seemed to speed up the opening in Windows Explorer. Thanks,

What happens if you open via C:\Users\youaccountname\Documents instead of via Libraries?

Ah ha! I just tried double clicking on a .doc file via Libraries\Documents and it took about 3 seconds to open.

It is the same thing as Libraries as far as speed. When I did MSCONFIG and unchecked the Microrsoft Services, that made a big difference. When I booted back they were all checked again but the documents opened faster. Don't know why, but it works. Thanks,
