I have copied my documents and I don't know how to get them into Windows 7 Libraries/Documents. I notice that Documents has a sub document of My documents. Where do I copy them to? Do I copy them to both or just one? I copied them to Documents and now they show up in both places. Looks like that is a waste of storage space on the hard drive.

I also have my music files copied and notice that there is a Libraries/Music and also a My Music folder.

Also what is this Public Documents and Public Music folders?

Thanks

Tom

Hi TGMcallie.

There is only one real My documents folder. Libraries are just a way of collecting other folders together for convenience. The Documents library has two folders in it by default, The users own documents (My documents) and the public documents folder. The public folders are available to all users on your system. You can add and remove folders from a library to suit your needs. There is only one copy of the files and they are stored in your real My Documents folder. The other libraries are structured in the same way.

Hope this helps.

Am I correct in thinking then that ONLY I can access My Documents and anyone can access Public Documents?

When I click on just Documents all my document files are displayed AND then when I click on MY Documents all my documents (exactly the same) are displayed.

If someone other than me clicked on just Documents or My Documents would they appear or not. Could someone other than me ONLY display the public documents?

Same way in Music and My Music.

Looks like it would be catagorized this way: Libraries/ My Documents and /My Music NOT Libraries / Documents / My Documents/Public Documents

Documents and My documents are the same folder as explained above by Ztrucker. It is correct that only you can access your My Documents (Unless you chose to share with someone) and anyone can access the public documents. The other person will have their own private My Documents folder.

Be careful. I think that by default if you create a document directly in the documents library it goes into public documents. It's so long ago I can't remember clearly. You can check and change this behavior by clicking on the "Includes 2 locations" at the top of the library pane. If you want to change the default location select and right click on the one you want and select "Set as default save location".

Thanks for your excellent help. I have checked and if you put documents into my documents, they do not go auto. into the public folder.

I also set up a guest account and when someone signs into the guest account which does not requie a password it does not show my documents or my music, just the public ones, but if you do not have a password on your account they can sign onto it as well and they can see your documents.
I was going to create a password for my account but it said that I would loose any saved passwords for websites that I had saved. I use Nortons security suite which I have set to auto save my passwords. Does this mean that I will loose them since they are set by a different program other than windows?

I'm sorry I don't know the answer to that but I would always advise having a strong password on your main account especially if it has admin rights or anyone who has access to your computer can access anything and make possibly damaging changes.

I am going to do that. I don't think it will effect my passwords because they are saved by Norton Security Suite.

I will try it and if they are removed then I can add them again.

Thanks
Tom
