Document Issue

Does Windows 7 not have a Word Document? All that I am seeing (r-click on screen-->New) is a Journal and Text Document.

I am looking for the ability to just type up some info and have it look presentable, Text Documents do not fall into that category. I have looked around, in "My Documents" it does not even offer the ability to create a document, only folders.

This has never been an issue in the past. Have my admittedly meager computer skills abandoned me? Does Windows 7 not have anything for day to day use that is not a pain or an eye sore?

I have been using a trial version of Windows Office for the time being. I am certainly not going to buy Windows Office just for the Word Document, which Windows 95 through XP had standard(never used Vista). Hopefully there is something that I have just not found yet. Something so new and easy to use that I can't even find it!

Anyway, for whomever takes the time to either point out the obvious for me or crush my hopes of finding something usable, I thank you.

Well can't argue with that. It is there when I go into the Start Menu. Can't be accessed by R-Clicking the screen or form My Documents?

Most likely now that I have found it, thank to FZ21Z, I will be able to figure it out. One can only hope.

Thank you.

Adding WordPad to the right-click file
As I mentioned, the first set of changes will set Notepad as the default application for any extensions that are not associated with another application. It will also add Notepad to the right-click menu for every file. If the file is too big for Notepad, you will get a prompt to open the file in WordPad instead. Here’s how to add WordPad to the right-click menu.

  1. Use the Start menu’s Run option to launch Regedit.
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*. (This should be the very first subtree.)
  3. A key called "shellex" should already be here. Add a new key called "Shell" at the same tree level as "shellex."
  4. Under the "Shell" key, create another key called "WordPad."
  5. Create another key under the "WordPad" key called "Command."
  6. You'll see a string value named Default when you highlight the "Command" key. Double-click Default and enter "C:\Program Files\Accessories\WORDPAD.EXE %1". (Note: Don’t enter the quotes, and make sure to use the appropriate path to the file wordpad.exe.) Click OK.
  7. Exit Regedit and test it out.

Note: The full path to the correct Registry key is:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\Shell\Wordpad\Command

- Adding Notepad and WordPad to the right-click menu

Hope that helps.

Right click a document, select Open With, select Choose default program, checkmark "Always use the selected program to open these kind of files", select the Browse button, select all files in the dropdown window (lower right) and navigate to the Wordpad.exe and select it.
