Document Scanning and Imaging Software

I have an HP all-in-one I use over our home network to scan my documents wirelessly and am getting tired of the slow and fatty-ness of the HP Document Imaging software.

Does anybody know of any alternatives that I could use? I'm not looking for anything fancy like OCR. I just want to be able to scan in documents and tell it to save as one PDF, multiple PDFs, JPGs, etc.; adjust their quality, rotation, etc.; and where to save them to.

Free is good but if it's cheap I'll consider it as well

Shareware: Vuescan: VueScan Scanning Software for Windows 7, Mac OS X (Snow Leopard) and Linux

I don't think there's much else out there.

I, of course, have not tested all of them but I dare say one issue with the majority of freeware apps is that they create unsearchable "PDF" image files rather than true PDF docs; for me a turn off.

You might be able to get a deal on an older version of ScanSoft, e.g., (last I looked about $50 on Amazon).

Trouble is as soon as you search on anything with the word "scan" you get all anti-virus hits. There could be good stuff out there but we'll never see it.

For now, It seems like Windows Fax and Scan + Acrobat is how I'm going to have to do this, unless the HP software gets better [doubt it].

Use Paint. Go to file > from Camera or Scanner. It will not save as .pdf, but you can convert it later with doPDF.
