Something in Windows (updated/current) is intermittently and consistently resetting the print setup (advanced) to 8 copies from the default of 1.

Any ideas short of reinstalling Win7 or upgrading the particular machine to 10 to remedy the problem?

I would uninstall the printer and then reinstall it.

It doesn't matter whether the print job goes to either of the two HP Officejets. If it were the printer, the problem would be occurring with just one...

Both printers are new within the past 2 years and both are HP Officejets.

This problem does not appears on either of the two other computers in the room, both of which are Windows 10.

I'll look into the machine's driver dates vs. the link this evening. I'll let you know.

Did you clear the bidirectional option in the port settings as mentioned in the link from RoWin7?

There is no mention of what you're describing (Did you clear the bidirectional option in the port settings as mentioned in the link from RoWin7) when I followed RoWin7's link

That link led to a single thread reply in MS Answers. Clicking the only link within that reply (described as updating the drivers) resulted in "We can’t connect to the server at h20000.www2.hp.com."

I searched on your referenced suggestion and the following is what I found:

  • Click Start , point to Settings , and then click Printers .
  • Right-click the bidirectional printer, and then click Properties .
  • Click the Ports tab, clear Enable bidirectional support , and then click OK .

Is this what you're suggesting I do? The description of the preceding related to connectivity problems not multiple print copies?

Yes, that is the option I was referring to. I probably should have been more specific.

This was posted by Fool Boy in that link-

"disable the bidirectional function in port settings."

That was followed by a post by Jersey Shore in the next post-

"This resolved the issue for me.
On a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit with the HP LaserJet P2035 and P2035n GDI Plug and Play Package driver version 20080825 (dated 25 Aug 2008) which was the latest driver version as of this post, I continuously received multiple copies of each print job until I canceled the job. Following foolboy007's instructions by unchecking the "Enable bidirectional support" under the Ports tab of the HP LaserJet P2035n's properties resolved the issue.
Another workaround is to install the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL5 version 5.1.0 (dated 10 May 2010) which is the latest driver version as of this post."

Okay, I admit to being thick--

With that out of the way, are you sure you're talking about Win7 not 10? There is no 'settings' in 7, that's a Start right click thing--right?

I just opened printers on the Win7 machine and there's no bidirectional anything. I searched Control Panel and the entire computer for bidirectional and zip comes back.

If you go to Devices and Printers in Control Panel and right click on your printer, you should be able to select Properties. There should be a Ports tab. That's where that option is. Are the printers connected by USB?

One printer is wireless for certain and I'm not sure if her primary HP is setup wireless or using her USB.

I think we can do a short cheer since I finally did find the d*mn port tab. I thought this bidirectional thing was a device you all were referring to ;-).

I unchecked same on both printers.

I printed a test from Notepad to both printers and a page from a worksheet. All single copies.

The acid test will be when Connie works in Quickbooks and Quicken the next few days.

I'll let you all know for certain.

Thanks for the patience!
