When I save some of my documents, they save with the suffix .docx. Then when I send them to people, no one can open them. What's happening?

docx is the new format that office 2007/2010 uses for doc files. Essentially they are compressed xml files.

If your friends don't have these versions of office, they won't be able to open the files. I'd just suggest changing your default file format to .doc and then you won't have issues with people who have older versions of MS office.

Or use one of the viewers.

Perhaps you are not aware, but , if you are having serious problems from the recipients, you can also open the file again and resave them as .doc file and send again?

I find it amazing that Office users aren't aware of the file format change, and that people without Office 2007/2010 haven't installed the free (yes free) format viewer. But I digress. Actually, most users are too dense to really take the time to pay attention to the fact that not everyone is using Office 2007/2010. They just go with the 'save' and send. This happened to previous versions of Office as well.

Well, that is because IT policy is to prevent the users from being a danger to themselves, which sometimes doesn't work out that way anyways.

I always send the file as a PDF then recipients can't change my original! Well some really savvy ones can but they are rarely the danger!

Well, if that company is standardized on 2003 in house, and almost exclusively deal with internally created documents...what point is there is ensuring and rolling out additional add-ins that they aren't going to use/need? Lots of IT shops are short staffed, and have other more pressing things to worry about on a daily basis.

Yes, like my company, where I am the IT department, top to bottom. I agree with what you are saying, but in this case, there isn't much testing to be done. It isn't like testing a whole new Office suite.

I didn't start the thread but have run into docx before but didn't know what to do with it but Google.
Future problem averted.
