Does a little scratch or two on the disc weaken the lense?

Hi,

I'm concerned if small scratches on the disc surface of Bluray/DVD weaks the lense of any optical drive?

I'm asking coz I have a PS4 and I have a couple of games that has just a few very thin scratches on discs (not the deep ones). So will it damage or weak my PS4 drive's lense in anyway?

My personal opinion, and what i do is: if any CD or DVD fails twice to read for any reason, out it comes immediately; if I cannot buff any scratch out, then a replacement is made. While I cannot prove personally any CD-DVD-BluRay lens or circuitry has been damaged by any CD or DVD -- I'm taking no chances.

I'm not sure how it would be possible for a scratch to weaken the lense. The disk never comes in contact with the lense so other than the scratch making the data on the disk unreadable, there should be no possible way to damage or weaken the lense.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
I should have been more clear; I think the circuitry, the operations, of a CD-DVD player could be dorked by repeatedly trying and repeatedly trying to read a CD or DVD.

A scratch will not affect the lens in any way. It may cause the Blu-Ray/DVD/CD not to read properly, and you'll get a glitch on screen or a pop in audio, but it will not affect the hardware. That is unless you have a very deep and long scratch that causes the laser mechanism to travel excessively and go out of alignment. That would have to be one serious scratch and the disk would be unusable, so really, nothing bad will happen from a few little scratches.

ODD shouldn't be damaged in any way by scratching / hazing on a disc.

Before tossing a disc however (for scratch / haze issues), polish it with car wax. Wax facilitates light transmission TO the Polycarbonate medium, in much the same manner as immersion oil on a specimen slide used in microscopy.

For heavier scratching, try 90 - 140 weight gear oil, being sure to get off as much oil as you can. Then apply wax over the blemish.
