Solved Does Anyone Else Have These Two CCleaner Problems

Just curious (as usual).

Run CCleaner as Admin;
Does not delete items in Recycle Bin
Shows System Restore Points

Run CCleaner as standard User;
Deletes items in Recycle Bin
Does not show System Restore Points.

These events have been occurring since I changed the UAC setting.
Maybe uninstall and reinstall the program ?

Absolutely bej you only need the free one and I have never run as admin etc so am not sure what that means?

Nope, never had those (or any that I can think of ) problems with Ccleaner.

You might want to go ahead & uninstall it & re-install it like you mentioned. If you want to make sure it's completely removed, you can use Revo Uninstaller. Read the documentation as you can easily hose your OS. The free version will work fine.

The free version of Revo will not work as on a 64bit system CCleaner is 64bit and the free version doesn't handle 64bit programs.

Never had these issues, but never ran the way you specify.

There are some configuration settings that control those items you mentioned. Perhaps you're just confusing the application (I'm an admin..... no I'm an admin).

cCleaner runs as admin by default, there's no reason to right-click run as. There's even a by-pass ua task.

What version are (were) you running? It doesn't hurt to uninstall/reinstall, so go ahead - I don't think there are any bits left over, it is after all cCleaner and would be embarrasing if it did =:>

If the issue occurs in the newly installed version - you might want to contact Pirifrom and report it as a bug. It's not a feature... it's a bug!

Otherwise, configure it how you want it and run as documented.

Ideally yes. Although you can still run this as a normal or restricted user, however, some files may not be deleted.


Doesn't appear to run natively as Admin.


In the Piriform forums, several posters have the same problem. Not all, but several and there didn't seem to be any definitive solution.


I thought if someone had run into these "bugs" maybe they solved them.

Thanks for correcting my misread of your post. I thought you we adding step (right click run as).

The difference is a Standard user versus an Admin user - I missed it completely and apologize.

I was refering to the Task Scheduler entry created by cCleaner that bypasses UA, but I should have been clearer.

Good idea to check the Piriform forums, too bad there wasn't a solution. The only issue though, and correct me if I'm wrong again, is that the admin user doesn't clean the Recycle bin - try togging the recycle bin setting under system for that user, restarting cCleaner in between.

I wouldn't expect a Std user to see or manage restore points.

Tried toggling the check mark under system...No joy.
Your point as to why system restore points don't show
when in standard user mode makes sense. You need Admin privleges to make
system changes and deleting a restore point qualifies as a change.
It's still weird, when in Admin mode, CCleaner will not delete the
recycle bin in my particular system.

I just tried a quick test, it might change thins for you, or it might not.

On my C:\ drive, I renamed the top level $RECYCLE.BIN to aa
- Windows recreated a new $RECYCLE.BIN

The original folder had a lock on the icon
The new one does not.

The sub-folder Recycle Bin in the original did not have a lock on the icon
the new sub-folder does.

I'm not sure how this will affect the system, but Windows is somewhat self healing. I tested a restore and empty on teh new RECYCLE.BIN and all is well. Interestingly, the files in the original $RECYLE.BIN were also emptied. And deleted files get placed in both. Hmmm It might take a reboot to resolve, or perhaps even deleteing aa to delink it.

It's an educated guess, not a proven fix.

Ok, so the delete and reboot didn't exactly restore things as they were, but everything is working fine.

See this tutorial for more concise information if you decide that the Recycle Bin is the culprit and not cCleaner (or an affect of you changing UA). Note that you might have to do this on all of your dirves if you have more thna one.

That's about all I can think of, but it's not that bad, you can always manually empty the Recycle Bin

Slartybart - I appreciate you sticking with me throughout this ordeal. I looked at the folders under Recycle Bin and the latest one is dated around the time I changed the UAC settings. The Bin also had a lock on it. No matter. My system runs very well and I'm leary of changing any major system files.
So, since I have "Add Run CCleaner option To The Recycle Bin Context Menu" checked, I can empty it at will. A slight inconvenience, but not a deal breaker.
