Does power plan actually affect performance lvl?

If i change my power plan from "Balanced" to "High performance" Should my computer be faster in video converting and in games? Does it actually affect the performace of your computer enought for you to notice it.?

It should. By a barely noticeable amount. benchmark it on balanced then on high and note the difference.

only if ur hardware supports it otherwise no.

for instance i have with my cpu it has amd cool and quite. when i put it on high performance the clock speed just stays at 3.0ghz but when its on balanced cool and quite is turned on and when my pc is idle or doing basic things the clock of each core goes to 800mhz when more power is needed it goes up 1.8ghz then to 2.4ghz and the full 3.0ghz. when i watch youtube hd or convert video it will go up to 3.0ghz then when im done back down to 800mhz this doesnt affect my performace at all because as its needed its given. also this makes my cpu idle 5c cooler. what u can do is download speccy and cpu-z. use speccy to monitor ur cpu temp and use to cpu-z to see the realtime clock speed of the cores. switch between balanced and high performance and compare the differences like cpu temp on idle and clock speeds. if it stays the same then this tells u that the setting is pointless and from there choose wat u want

When I first installed Windows 7 Ultimate, I tweaked it to the max performance settings. Disabled all of the visual effects etc. When I was done, it looked like a stripped down version of Windows 95. Ugly. It was fast, though. Just lately I let windows choose my settings and tested my speeds. I could see almost no difference in anything and it looks good. You can look at my specs for this machine and see that it's not a great powerhouse. Windows 7 is a well designed Operating system, in my opinion. I think you can run it the way it comes out of the box. Thanks for listening.

It's more about power savings than performance. i.e you could have no power saving and your processor would run full bore all the time, even without a load. This "might" have an impact on performance benchmarking programs.

At least that's the way I understand it.

You need to go into the advanced Power Options and under "Processor power management" set the "minimum processor state" to 5-10% won't go that low, will only go as low as CnQ will let it. My 630 x4 currently OC'ed to 3290 MHz (default 2800 MHz) drops down to around 940 MHz (and the vcore goes from 1.35V down to 1.15V) when there is no load, and bounces between the two depending on load.

Are you saying that it would be hard on the processor? I just set my power settings to balanced. I will run with that for a while to see how it acts. If high performance just uses more power, and is not hard on my processor, then I will opt for high performance. Unless the balanced setting runs well for me. I love to learn from these posts. I am teachable.:D

Not hard on your processor, hard on your wallet in the form of an electricity bill :)

I have "Processor power management" set to a "minimum processor state" of 5% and a maximum state of 100%

I also use "Balanced" but with some tweaks. This allows my system to go into a power saving mode when not in use, or throttle back my CPU when not needed. This way I can use my CPU without having the processor run at 100% all the time.

Guess I should have included a screen shot. :) That processor power setting works when set to high performance as well,

in conjunction with Cool n Quiet enabled. Not sure if it works with Intel's though. Guess you could be the guinea pig. :)

I am not concerned with my electric bill. From what I have read and heard, If I leave my pc on 24/7, 365 days per year, my cost will be sixty to one hundred dollars per year. I can live with that and even more. My concern would be with damage to my pc. That is another debate. Leave it on or turn it off. I leave mine on from the time I get up to the time I go to bed. I shut it down for the night. Since I have changed power options to balanced, I can tell no difference in performance than when it was set to high performance.

It depends on many factors, as does the shower analogy. Generally speaking though it will/should.
